Position Title: Conservation Program Intern

Location: Berkeley, California

Dates and compensation: An Intern is needed for 10-15 hours per week to work 5-hour shifts. Interns are expected to contribute at least 2 shifts per week. Rising Sun is flexible regarding schedules and workspace and will consider allowing work to take place from home. Gas mileage will be reimbursed for any project-related driving during intern hours.

Please note: This is an unpaid internship. Rising Sun is happy to provide documentation for earning course credit, community service, etc. Successful spring interns are given top consideration for paid employment during the CYES Summer program.

Description: Our growing CYES program demands an attentive staff to manage its administrative and outreach affairs. By assisting, you both have an opportunity to learn by watching senior program managers operate, and also be responsible for smaller projects within the CYES program. Our interns are an integral part of our success. You will not be “on the sidelines” watching the action; you will be right in the middle of it providing invaluable assistance. Responsibilities:

The Conservation Program Intern works closely with management staff and also works independently to coordinate and carry out campaign efforts within CYES. In the interview and hiring process, intern needs and strengths will be assessed and considered in building their duties and responsibilities. Intern projects and responsibilities may include:

  • Research:Gather information about community events for outreach, organizations through whom we can promote our program, and demographics of the communities we serve.
  • Direct outreach:Promote our energy- and water-savings service to residents by attending community events, canvassing door-to-door, etc.
  • Media outreach:Get the word out about our services to the community through social media, PSAs, press releases, etc.
  • Graphic design:Help create fliers and other collateral to promote the CYES program to the communities we serve.
  • Phone banking:Follow up with residents on our waitlist to schedule them for their no-cost Green House Call. Phone banking is most successful in the evening and can happen from home or the office.
  • Administrative Assistance:It takes a great deal of organization and planning to keep all the moving parts of CYES running smoothly. The Conservation Program Intern may deliver support to maintain spreadsheets, enter data, file paperwork, run errands, and handle other administrative duties.

Qualifications:

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Highly motivated individuals who have an interest or a degree in, or are currently studying:

    • Environmental-related major
    • Communications/Media
    • Graphic Design
  • Prior office or program administration experience
    • Computer skills: must be highly proficient with PC, Windows OS, and Microsoft Office. Strong Excel knowledge preferred.
    • Experience in supporting supervisors to free up their time by handling assignments with little or no supervision
    • Problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to speak confidently and professionally in person and on the telephone
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Must be motivated, committed, and a highly personable professional
  • Interest in public relations, sales, or marketing
  • Evening availability late spring/ early summer for phone banking (schedule can be negotiated)

Preferred:

  • Bilingual
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental education, green jobs, youth development, community engagement, or service learning
  • Regular access to a car
