Position Title: Director of Communications

Description: The successful candidate is one who thrives in a small, entrepreneurial, mission-driven environment. This individual must be creative, ambitious, and passionate about speaking to diverse audiences about breast cancer prevention, environmental health science, and the groundbreaking research of the Institute. The Director will work with our research team, development team, and consultants.
S/he will be a chief architect and leader of strategic communications initiatives.
In addition, the Communications Director will have the opportunity to contribute to our NIH-funded research on environmental health communications. For example, we have developed and studied innovative practices for reporting individual results to participants in biomonitoring and household exposures studies. The level of involvement in our communications related research projects may be a significant or more modest aspect of the position, depending on the interests and experience of the applicant.
Responsibilities:
- Develop a strategic communications plan.
- Develop core messages that communicate our approach to environmental health and prevention science.
- Build on our successful news media relationships, write press releases, and manage news media outreach when our research results are announced.
- Oversee strategy and content for online media, including website, social media, and e-newsletter.
- Oversee development communications, working with our excellent outside consultant to produce appeal letters, annual report, and other written materials.
- Identify and manage consultants to contribute to communications programs.
- Expand our audiences and influence.
- Contribute to our research program on environmental health communications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 5-plus years’ experience in communications
- Excellent, demonstrated writing skills and ability to translate science so that it is both compelling and accurate for lay audiences
- Experience with new media and ability to stay abreast of evolving technologies and strategies
- Experience successfully managing staff and consultants
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to handle deadlines, details and multiple projects
- Must be a strategic thinker and self-starter with a proven ability to successfully drive new initiatives
