Position Title: SAMS Water Intern
Location: Appalachia, Virginia
Dates and compensation: 20 hour/week unpaid; June – August 2015

Description: The Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards (SAMS) are looking for a part time water intern to help with their water campaign. Interested applicant with backgrounds in Chemistry, Hydrology, Geology, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Law, Environmental Policy and Planning, or other equivalent natural sciences should apply. The primary tasks of this internship position will be data collection of conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, pH and temperature as well as the grab sampling for heavy metals in streams believed to be polluted by coal mining.
Other tasks may include, pulling of mining permits from the local Department of Mines Minerals and Energy.
Qualifications:
- Being able to apply the scientific method
- Being able to follow proper QA/QC protocol
- Attention to detail
- Background in Hydrology
- Knowledge of GIS software including: ArcGIS, Google Earth and GRASS
- Time management and self direction
- Being an awesome person!
Other desirable qualifications include:
- Familiarity with Surface Mining and Reclamation Act and Clean Water Act
- Prior organizing experience
- Toleration of Lack of Privacy
- Community living (with people and pets)
- Ability to decipher the legal language of the Clean Water Act and SMCRA
