Description: The Fort Lewis College Environmental Center (EC) is seeking an organized and energetic individual to assist with the EC’s programmatic, operational and administrative functions. The EC is a dynamic student organization that provides various environmental services to the campus, implements campus and community programs highlighting environmental and social justice issues, and supports 20-30 student staff through training and mentorship. The EC is committed to: 1) Cultivating and empowering environmental leaders who create social change, 2) Implementing meaningful environmental initiatives that advance regional sustainability and shift our collective paradigm, 3) Engaging in campus and community partnerships to amplify our collective environmental impact and strengthen a culture of sustainability in our region and 4) Enhancing student success by complementing academic learning with applied research, valuable internships, and relevant hands-on projects
The Assistant Coordinator position will play an integral role in training and supporting our student leaders, overseeing office operations, spearheading projects/programs in our focus areas, and coordinating various operations. The latter includes work with both our in-vessel compost system and our campus garden. The ideal candidate will be approachable, enjoy working with students in both a supervisory and educational capacity, and excited to work in a collaborative environment. The Assistant Coordinator reports directly to the Environmental Center Coordinator. This is a 40-hour/week, 9-month permanent, exempt staff position.
Qualifications :
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Strong background in student mentorship and development
• Demonstrated ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues, students, and other stakeholders
• 2-4 years of program management/office management, event planning, or project management.
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities, self-direct workload, adapt to changing circumstances, and focus on quality and process improvement
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in team settings
• Commitment to environmental and social justice issues
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with website management
• Experience with gardening/agricultural production and/or compost systems
• Previous experience working in a college or university
• Previous experience working for a community-based environmental or non-profit organization
• Previous experience in the sustainability field
• Community Organizing experience
Responsibilities:
Student Leadership Development (40%)
• Work with EC Coordinator to manage student staff teams, their student coordinators, and all affiliated student-led sustainability projects
• Facilitate student’s personal & professional development through coaching, mentorship, and training
• Work with EC Coordinator to develop and implement an outcomes-based development strategy the incorporates staff retreat, staff trainings and external development opportunities.
Program & Project Management (30%)
• Work with stakeholders and students to identify and develop projects that 1) meet student learning outcomes and 2) hold potential of greatest impact on sustainability at both a local and global level; focus areas may include campus sustainability and zero waste initiatives
• Manage and expand the FLC Composting Program
• Build co-curricular opportunities that advance project and program goals
Office & Media Management (20%)
• Manage student-related human resources tasks (ie. Hiring paperwork, scheduling, etc)
• Provide administrative support to the Environmental Center Coordinator and student teams as needed
• Create and revise office procedures for various office operations, systems, and internal communication
• Oversee general office maintenance and cleanliness
• Manage website, calendar, and other electronic outreach outlets
• Manage and maintain the EC’s resource library
Organizational Support (10%)
• Serve as a non-voting member of the EC Board of Directors and affiliate committees as appropriate
• Assist with creation and implementation of fundraising strategies including grant writing
• Assist with budget tracking, planning, and management
