Description: NRDC is seeking a Climate and Energy Advocate to work with our climate and energy teams based in Washington, DC, to focus on a) business outreach and analysis in the context of clean energy, and b) policies and other approaches to reduce climate pollution from various sectors.
Responsibilities: The selected candidate will help NRDC’s Energy & Transportation and the Climate and Clean Air programs with advocacy and outreach to capitalize on President Obama’s Climate Action Plan and beyond, and help establish robust carbon pollution standards for power plants, push for effective standards to reduce methane pollution from the oil and gas industry, and promote climate pollution reduction from other sectors of the economy. Responsibilities include:
Business outreach and analysis in context of clean energy:
- Undertake outreach to and build relationships with large companies, business associations (including those in clean energy), and large utility customers, in context of establishing carbon pollution standards and related clean energy policies;
- Help develop NRDC’s business engagement strategy, and coordinate and manage a cross-programmatic, cross-functional team to achieve strategic goals;
- Manage research, and economic and statistical analysis to convey the economic and jobs benefits of clean energy resources;
- Assist in the development of systems and processes to manage NRDC’s business relationships and to effectively communicate these as relevant across NRDC.
Policy analysis and advocacy to reduce industrial climate pollution from various sectors:
- Analyze carbon pollution reduction opportunities beyond the power sector. Perform or supervise analyses of emissions trends, reduction potential, economic impacts for large carbon-emitting industries (e.g., oil refineries, chemical production, energy use in manufacturing);
- Help define and execute our advocacy strategy to push for effective policy approaches, informed by above, including regulatory action, new legislation, etc.;
- Manage and contribute to drafting well-supported policy-comments, developing reports, reviewing new studies/reports, political advocacy, external meetings, litigation, media engagements, sign-on advocacy letters, campaign events and recruiting of partners, etc.
Overall:
- Develop written and oral advocacy and communications content, to compellingly convey NRDC’s messages in this regard, including to businesses, consumers, media, and the general public;
- Collaborate closely with other NRDC departments and external partner organizations;
- Represent NRDC in a variety of meetings and fora.
Qualifications:
- Hold an MPA, MBA or Masters in economics, or other policy or law degree in relevant field.
- Have at least 2-5 years of relevant work experience in business, energy or environmental field.
- Have experience working on clean energy or climate pollution-related policies, particularly pertaining to policy implementation.
- Have experience working on business strategy and possess an understanding of the utility and clean energy and other sectors. Experience working on sustainability issues in the private sector and/or economics of clean energy may be particularly helpful.
- Have strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Have significant project management experience.
- Be willing to travel.
- Be fluent in written and spoken English and strong writing and oral presentation skills.
