Description
Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery is an industry working group dedicated to generating business value through turning waste into assets. The Coalition identifies and promotes effective waste diversion technologies and programs through conducting pilot programs in New York City and around the country.
In the current system, 2,400 tons per day of materials are exported from New York City’s accommodation, food service, and retail sectors and sent to distant landfills. CoRR’s programs close the loop on paper, metal, plastic, and glass, reduce food waste, and locally recover the energy in wasted food, powering the city with green energy.
We recently completed successful pilot with Starbucks and Pret A Manger to test the collection and recycling of coffee cups and other paper foodservice packaging with old corrugated cardboard—the most extensively recycled material in the United States. As part of our work with Pret A Manger, we facilitated implementation of a collection strategy for paper, plastic and glass recyclables from its front of house operations. In the coming year, we hope to expand these pilots to 150 stores and 5 different brands in New York City. In addition to foodservice packaging programs, CoRR is also at the forefront of efforts to divert wholesale packaging from landfills, and to help create a strategy for commercial composting and food waste recovery programs.
