Summary: The For the Birds! (FTB!)Teacher Naturalist will be responsible for teaching the For The Birds! Program through the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center (TRSAC). For the Birds! is a multi session, interdisciplinary environmental education program for elementary students that uses birds as the “hook” to engage students while meeting State education standards. The Teacher Naturalist will teach this program to multiple classes on Long Island as the result of a recent expansion of the program.
Overview:
The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center is one of Audubon New York’s nature centers and is operated through the auspices of Audubon New York, the state program of the National Audubon Society. The Center provides environmental education for schoosl, scouts, camps, and family groups.  The goals of the programs are to provide direct experiences in nature while involving students and the public in interactive, inquiry-based, hands-on activities. Through participation in Center programs it is hoped that participants will take conservation action to help preserve wildlife and their habitats. The Sanctuary also conducts scientific research, monitoring avian populations and restoration of native ecosystems. The Center is located in Oyster Bay, Long Island and is the first National Audubon Center.
Position Summary:
The For the Birds! (FTB!)Teacher Naturalist will be responsible for teaching the For The Birds! Program through the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center (TRSAC). For The Birds! is a multi session, interdisciplinary environmental education program for elementary students that uses birds as the “hook” to engage students while meeting State education standards. The Teacher Naturalist will teach this program to multiple classes on Long Island as the result of a recent expansion of the program. The position is grant funded and funds have been secured for three years.  The Teacher Naturalist will assist the FTB! Education Coordinator with the delivery of this program for the Long Island region and assist with the implementation of FTB! curriculum at Long Island elementary schools. This includes all aspects of programming including materials preparation, set up , clean up and follow up.
Essential Functions:
  • Teach the For The Birds! curriculum in elementary school classrooms.
  • Assist Education Coordinator with implementation of FTB! curricula.
  • Assist with volunteer training and facilitation in order that volunteers can independently  conduct programs on behalf of FTB! and TRSAC.
  • Communicate with school staff regarding program scheduling and other needs.
  • Create, prepare and organize program materials.
  • Assist education Coordinator with the training of volunteers.
  • Teach additional environmental and natural history programs in the Long Island region.
  • Interact and work with the general public, Audubon members, teachers, TRSAC staff and ANY Director of Education and Centers.  This may include answering phones, fielding questions about natural history and about the For The Birds! Program, TRSAC programs, service and operations.
  • Participate in various TRSAC programs.
  • Other duties assigned by the Education Coordinator.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Interpretation, Education, Natural Sciences, Outdoor Recreation, or related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic natural history and environmental science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic bird biology, ecology, and identification, or demonstrated  willingness and ability to learn about birds
  • Experience working with groups of children of all ages but particularly elementary school children.
  • Ability to work with limited resources.
  • Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills.
  • Self-motivated, detailed-oriented with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to conservation of birds and other wildlife and their habitats.
  • Possess a valid New York state driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one in a timely manner.
  • Ability to make decisions requiring good judgment and complete knowledge of subject matter, including task sequencing and office administration procedures.
  • Use oral communication to perform work, including answering phones, communicating with the public, and coordinating with other personnel.
  • Use written, verbal, and visual sources of information, including reports, procedural documentation, manuals, and reference materials.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with conflicting deadlines while effectively managing priorities The preferred candidate will be committed to the Audubon mission of conservation
