Summary: The University of Rhode Island’s W. Alton Jones environmental education facility seeks qualified individuals to teach a variety of ecology, social history and adventure lessons as a part of the facility’s school year programming schedule.
Field Teacher/Naturalist
The Site: The URI Environmental Education Center is situated on 2,300 acres of forests, wetlands, and old farmland—the W. Alton Jones Campus. Dedicated to environmental education, the Center has been offering quality day and residential programs for over 30 years. The residential camp facilities include a knotty pine dining lodge with field stone fireplaces, hardwood floors, and five meeting rooms. The six cabins have electricity, bunk beds, hot showers, and lavatory facilities. Each cabin sleeps between sixteen and twenty students.
Qualifications: Successful candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Bachelor’s Degree in environmental studies, education, science, or a related field, prior experience teaching children and/or leading outdoor environmental education programs preferred. Certifications in First Aid and CPR are required by the starting date. Experience with song leading, story telling, and/or addressing large groups is a plus.
Benefits: $250/week ($275/week for certified teacher), private room (including breaks), housing with wireless internet and cable TV, meals and food supplies (including weekends), and free laundry room.
Dates of Employment: Yearly: Early September to December. Early January to Mid-June or Early March to mid-June.

URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking qualified educators to plan, teach, and lead outdoor lessons in Ecology (forest, wetland, wildlife, and winter ecology), Social Science (living history, archaeology, farm life, early American history), Adventure (group building, low ropes, orienteering, outdoor skills), and Evening Programs (night hike, campfire, underground railroad, town meeting, etc.) to school students primarily in grades 4-8. Evening duties required (two to three nights per week). Other responsibilities are to help create a supportive community environment for students, visiting teachers, administrators, parents, and other staff, help with non-teaching resource projects on a rotating basis, assist with the operation of a historic working farm, help with limited kitchen duties, and participate in trail and grounds maintenance.
