PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Executive Director (ED) works closely with and under the authority of the Board of Directors (Board), its committees (Executive, Development, Program/Education, Operations, Finance) and corporate officers (Chairperson, Treasurer, and Secretary). The ED manages CPF’s day-to-day operations and, with the support of the Board and officers, leads the development and implementation of all aspects of its operations including:

  • Donor Development and Fundraising
  • Program Development and Oversight
  • Staff Management
  • Financial Administration
  • Board Relations and Public Communications

Details regarding these areas of responsibility are described below.

Donor Development and Fundraising

  • establish a robust development plan with a focus on increasing the organization’s income from individuals, foundations, businesses, and government agencies
  • set and meet annual fundraising goals from diverse and substantial funding sources
  • cultivate relationships and solicit major gifts from potential donors including individuals, foundations, businesses, and government agencies
  • develop and write grant proposals

Program Development and Oversight

  • guide and oversee the development of program activities so that they are consistent with the board-adopted “Education Program Plan”
  • work with Director of Education to update and refine, as needed, the “Education Program Plan”
  • establish accountability standards and systems that track the effectiveness and impact of the organization’s program activities

Staff Management

  • manage and oversee the day-to-day activities of a staff of 6-8 (full-time employees, interns, and volunteers) in accordance with typical non-profit business practices
  • develop, maintain, and revise a policy and procedures manual for staff, interns, and volunteers

Financial Administration and Contract Management

  • have fiscal responsibility for the annual budget, as well as daily operating expenses
  • oversee an annual operating budget of $800,000-1,000,000

Board Relations and Public Communications

  • communicate, on a regular basis, with Board members to ensure that they are appropriately engaged and actively participating in supporting CPF’s program and fundraising activities
  • organize Board and committee meetings, and support these meetings by developing agendas and supporting materials, and ensuring that minutes are produced and distributed

Other Duties as Assigned by the Board and Chairperson

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced and visionary professional with a minimum of ten years of professional experience working in nonprofit organizations especially in the fields of environmental education, school improvement/education reform, and/or environmental conservation. A Bachelors degree is required, however a Masters or Doctoral degree in a related field is preferred.

The successful candidate will be a person of integrity and stature with proven leadership experience, exemplary nonprofit management skills, and a strong commitment to the environment and education. Other essential skills and experience include the following:

  • ability to lead, inspire, and motivate staff, board members, and others
  • track record of building strong, mutually beneficial relationships and achieving results
  • broad understanding of issues related to education and the environment
  • experience working with a diverse Board of Directors
  • significant project development and management experience in areas related to the mission
  • excellent written and oral communication skills including a high comfort level in presenting to the education community, potential donors, and other business, governmental, and non-governmental leaders
  • understanding of financial statements and issues and proven ability to be able to run an organization in a transparent, effective, and efficient manner
