Summary: The LowCountry Institute, a 501(c)(3) environmental non-profit, is seeking a full-time environmental science educator to coordinate development and implementation of environmental science lesson plans based on experiential learning. This is a one-year, grant-funded position that may be renewed an additional year.

The Institute is housed in the Mobley Nature Center on Spring Island in Beaufort County, SC. Spring Island is a 3,000 acre residential nature park, which is also home to several threatened species and 30 miles of hiking trails. The Institute is committed to protecting and defending the environment of the region through education, research and advocacy. Its education programs focus on local biodiversity, the marine resources of Port Royal Sound, and water quality issues. The Nature Center staff consists of a five-person team who frequently collaborate on a variety of education and land management projects (see www.lowcountryinstitute.org).

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

 

  1. Develop math and science lesson plans that accompany experiential learning field studies being done by local schools (grades K-8)

 

  1. Teach pre- and post-trip lessons to the classes of schools participating in the program.
  2. Work in a supportive role with teachers implementing newly created lesson plans.
  3. Accompany classes (grades 4-8) on overnight field trips to evaluate the effectiveness of the field study activities
  4. Provide administrative support for the LCI Master Naturalist Program for Teachers which is taught one Saturday a month.
  5. Maintain a website that has lesson plans posted on it.

Qualifications and Required Personal Traits:

 

  1. B.S. or B.A degree with coursework in environmental science and the physical sciences

 

  1. Prior teaching experience
  2. Strong interest in how students learn and integrating information from diverse sources.
  3. Effective at creating a supportive relationship with teachers.
  4. Demonstrated organizational skills in time management, paperwork, scheduling, and meeting deadlines.
  5. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  6. Experience with digital video editing a plus.
  7. Independent worker who accomplishes all responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  8. Ability to work flexible hours that may include evenings and weekends when necessary.
  9. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  10. Must be able to obtain South Carolina driver’s license.
  11. Must be willing to pass CPR/First Aid certifications.
  12. Accepts and uses constructive criticism from the director, other staff, and Spring Island members.

Compensation: Annual salary is $39,000 and includes benefits package.

Starting Date: September 1, 2011.
