Would you like to know more about our amazing Hudson River Estuary? Come immerse yourself in Hudson River research at one of the most beautiful vantage points on the banks of the river. Meet and talk to scientists in action. Bring your family; there’s something for everyone.

EXHIBITORS
Fish Sampling & Tracking Techniques
View an array of fish sampling devises. Watch demonstration of electroshock boat and 150 foot haul seine (post-Irene river conditions permitting). Handle tracking devices used to unlock migratory fish mysteries.

Fish Otoliths: Natural data-loggers
Observe dissection of fish otoliths from Hudson River fish or try it yourself. Learn how these tiny ear bones record detailed information about the fish’s past.

Hudson River Eel Study Updates
Remember the eel ladder we constructed at last year’s Sci/River event? Hear about its successful deployment in a Hudson River tributary and the latest on juvenile eel migration.

Monitoring Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
Try your hand (or eye) at aerial photo interpretation & learn how to use a hand-held GPS device.

Hudson River Sustainable Shorelines
Rummage through shoreline plant debris for hidden life. Hunt for answers to shoreline questions in unexpected places at Norrie Point in a shoreline scavenger hunt.

Hudson Valley Mastodonts: Life After the Ice Age
Handle mastodont artifacts and hear tales of these ancient mammals (including one found here in Hyde Park) and the world they lived in.

Remote Sensing of the Hudson River Bottom
Learn how scientists “see” the murky river bottom with remote sensing devices through computer simulation and a simple game.

Aging Marshes Through Core Sampling
Watch core sampling demonstrations in Norrie Cove and learn how they’re windows on the past.

Tracking Tidal Marsh Change
Canoe Indian Kill tidal marsh to discover tools for tracking how marshes are changing (weather permitting and limited seating).

Amphibians on the Move!
Follow the migration of local amphibians with a hands-on game & learn to identify these fascinating creatures.

REAL-TIME DATA STREAMS
Hudson River Estuary Real-time Data Network
Keep track of current water quality parameters like temperature, oxygen, turbidity & more on Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System monitor.

Energy Conservation at Norrie Point
Compare current energy generation and consumption on Norrie Point’s solar panel monitor. Find out how we fared in our first year producing solar power.

Data in the Making
Join Data-man to try your hand at data collection at Norrie Point. Think data is dry and boring? Think again!
