Summary:
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is a world-renowned scientific institution operated by the University of California (UCOP) for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Reporting to the Deputy Laboratory Director, the primary role for this position will be to provide organizational and technical leadership for the Lab’s overall environmental sustainability operations, including defining the strategic vision, inspiring and motivating staff, and managing performance goals in support of the vision. It is expected that this individual will serve as chief environmental sustainability spokesperson to external audiences, including the Department of Energy, the University of California Office of the President, the general public, industry partners, local municipalities, sustainability non-profit organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
NOTE: This position is designated as an “At-Will” appointment.
The successful candidate will directly report to Deputy Director Horst Simon.
The position will provide leadership for LBNL to meet DOE’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions consistent with Executive Order 13514 goal of 28% reduction from FY2008 emissions by 2020
Responsibilities:
· Work with LBNL staff in the Operations Directorate and other Lab Divisions to develop a comprehensive strategic performance plan that incorporates the Lab’s sustainability efforts and sets goals that exceed the Department of Energy minimum requirements for sustainability.
· Review and assess the Lab’s operations relating to sustainability, and evaluate programs for best practices, opportunities for synergy with existing or potential R&D efforts at Berkeley Lab, and opportunities for external collaboration with private and public sector partners.
· Streamline business processes and Lab operations to encourage sustainable behavior through energy and water conservation, waste diversion, environmentally preferable procurement, and alternative transportation.
· Enhance the Lab’s Environmental Management System to enhance sustainability metrics.
· Develop and implement a communications plan to engage internal and external stakeholders.
· Work with Laboratory researchers and Facilities Division personnel to identify opportunities to integrate Berkeley Lab R&D into Lab operations. For example, LBNL’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division expertise in building energy efficiency, smart grid/demand response, renewables integration, and other areas could facilitate “test bed” opportunities for at- or near-market technologies. Serve as a skilled facilitator and intermediary between Facilities and the scientific Divisions to ensure uninterrupted facilities services while enabling advanced R&D in sustainable operations.
The ideal candidate will:
· Have at least 10 years of environmental sustainability related experience to include a minimum of 2 years in a managerial capacity;
· Have a record of accomplishment in increasing the sustainability of operations of another organization(s);
· Experience partnering with and/or have connections to industry partners including those in building automations systems, demand response/smart grid, network, sensor, energy efficiency, utilities, waste and water management, and other sectors relating to energy and sustainability;
· A substantial understanding of the scientific research and development process, and in the commercialization of newly developed technologies and/or applications;
· The capacity to serve as a spokesperson for the laboratory to a variety of audiences, including media, members of the public, and relevant offices at the Department of Energy;
· Experience working directly with Federal government stakeholders (preferred, not required);
· An advanced degree in a relevant field such as urban planning, environmental sciences, engineering is strongly preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered for well-qualified candidates.
