Summary:

The Taiya Inlet Watershed Council and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are seeking an intern to conduct community based environmental education and stewardship.  Position will be 40 hours a week, with time split evenly between the two organizations.  Position will include development of a community survey and analyzing data, and may include curriculum development and community outreach.

Skagway, AK

Skagway is a small, coastal town in southeast Alaska.  Year-round population is around 800, but this grows to over 2,000 when the tourist season brings over 900,000 visitors.  Skagway is located in the Inside Passage, surrounded by beautiful mountains and the upper Lynn Canal.

Housing and $1,000.00 stipend awarded upon completion.  May qualify for independent study or research credit.

Position Description

Taiya Inlet Watershed Council

Taiya Inlet Watershed Council is a small, community-based non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and improve the Taiya Inlet Watershed.  To learn more about Taiya Inlet Watershed Council, visit www.taiya.org

Intern will Develop survey and analyze data on local stormwater and watershed management.  Other tasks will be determined upon selection of intern and may include development of outreach materials and community outreach, website development, GIS, grant research and writing.

Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Klondike Gold Rush NHP commemorates the epic journey that thousands of people endured during the rush to the Yukon Territory looking for gold between 1897-1899.  The park includes the downtown historic district of Skagway, AK, the Chilkoot Trail, White Pass, and the Dyea Townsite.  The park protects both natural and cultural areas.  This internship would include working with the Natural Resources Program and/or Division of Interpretation and Education.  For more information on the park please go to our website at www.nps.gov/klgo.

Possible projects with the park  may include environmental education curriculum development, community outreach, and/or resource management inventory and monitoring projects.  Internship project will be determined upon selection of intern and park needs.
