The California Outreach Intern will assist efforts to organize support for strong California climate, clean energy, and clean vehicles policies. Intern’s duties include but are not limited to: engaging UCS members and activists in our campaigns; helping to load email alerts and other online activism; providing support for outreach efforts to experts such as scientists and economists; event coordination; and database management.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in outreach and organizing, as well as transportation, climate and energy policy. Candidates interested in public policy, global warming, transportation, renewable energy and environmental issues are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Engaging UCS members and activists in our campaigns;
  • Providing assistance with administration of online communications and web content management;
  • Providing support for outreach efforts to scientists and other experts, coalition partners and the general public;
  • Recruiting volunteers for special campaign activities in the Berkeley office;
  • Providing logistics support for campaign event planning;
  • Participating in regular campaign and program meetings;
  • Scheduling meetings with agency and legislative officials;
  • Providing support for projects as needed by the Berkeley Office Manager;
  • Assisting with maintenance of departmental databases, publications, electronic and paper files, subscriptions, staff calendar, dissemination of reports and other materials to targeted recipients; and
  • Scheduling campaign meetings and other internal and external meetings for department staff as needed.

Basic knowledge and experience

Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with computers. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook, Google Docs, and database and graphic manipulation software strongly preferred. Also needed are excellent interpersonal relations skills including an ability to work both independently and in teams, and to interact professionally with individuals with a wide range of skills and responsibilities, Knowledge of transportation, energy, and/or climate issues; experience working in a non-profit environment; and Spanish language proficiency are pluses.

Compensation, hours & duration

The Union of Concerned Scientists provides a monthly stipend between $1,733 and $2,600 to interns based on academic experience. Full time for 12 months.
