Summary:
Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Global Witness (GW) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to exposing the corrupt exploitation of natural resources and international trade systems, to drive campaigns that end impunity, resource-linked conflict, and human rights and environmental abuses. We operate in areas where environmentally destructive trade is funding conflict or human rights violations. We collect the evidence and use it to achieve long-term change. Thematically, GW campaigns to stop natural resources from fuelling conflict, combat corruption in the oil, gas, and mining sectors, prevent corrupt funds from entering the global financial system, and tackle illegal logging and unsustainable forest use.
Global Witness’ U.S. office is seeking an intern to start as soon as possible. Internships are geared towards current undergraduates, recent university graduates, and graduate students with a significant background in international relations, and research on natural resource governance, development, and conflict issues. Particular preference will be given to applicants withWashingtonadvocacy experience. In order to support our general advocacy efforts, we also look for candidates with an interest and experience in tracking Congressional policy and developments (e.g. congressional calendars, legislation, hearings, committee assignments), and media coverage. Specific Hill or other office experience and language skills are a plus, but not a necessity. Washington-based interns interact with Global Witness’ international staff as well and may have the opportunity for in-depth research in areas of personal interest, in addition to a broad exposure to the DC policy community.
Although each internship is slightly different, the following assignments are typical of a GW Washington internship:
- Finding out about, attending, and reporting back on relevant Washington events and symposia, including Congressional hearings, policy dialogues, World Bank and IMF events.
- Assisting with sector-related research, including oil, gas, mining, and forest industry publications and international affairs-related articles related to our work.
- Conducting in-depth research on a particular issue or for a specific GW report.
- Tracking relevant media.
