Summery:

Summary: The Environmental Education Specialist position develops and delivers outdoor environmental education programs to children and adults who visit the Audubon Center in Greenwich, CT, as well as at offsite locations throughout Fairfield/Westchester Counties area. He/she will be primarily responsible for managing the school and volunteer teacher naturalist programs, as well as summer camp. Salary: $35-$40k/year, with benefits.

Essential Functions:

Design and teach environmental topics to school groups, Boy and Girl Scouts, summer campers, Audubon members, visitors, and members of the general public, consistent with Audubon’s conservation goals

Manage the Center’s education program scheduling, including the scheduling of the volunteer Teacher Naturalists

Act as Camp Director, and oversee the planning and delivery of a seven-week summer nature day camp program

Maintain contacts with administrators for school districts in Fairfield and Westchester Counties, and work with curriculum directors and teachers to integrate  Audubon’s education programs and conservation goals with school curriculum standards

Supervise education volunteers and hire and train temporary staff, such as the Education Intern, as needed.   Manage the recruitment and training of volunteer teacher naturalists

Lead natural history walks and present workshops, classes and seminars on environmental topics; make presentations describing ecological processes, plant and animal species, geology, hydrology, chemistry, and other science topics to school groups, Audubon members, visiting organizations, volunteers, and the general public; appear before public meetings, and express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely

Assist with Center events, projects, and campaigns as needed

Greet visitors and the general public and field public inquiries about natural history subjects

Create exhibits and displays throughout the Center.

Assist Nature Store personnel as needed

Assist in writing and coordinating grants

Perform administrative functions, as necessary

Qualifications: (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

Bachelor’s Degree in environmental education, environmental science, or related field

At least three years experience as an environmental educator or naturalist, including experience managing and delivering education programs.  Must have demonstrated experience in teaching children and adults in formal and informal settings.

Demonstrated knowledge of ecology, natural history, and conservation issues (knowledge of Connecticut’s native ecological communities and their natural processes a plus).

Ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people, follow assignments closely, and work independently of supervisor.

Ability to keep organized and accurate records and work efficiently without direct supervision.

A very high degree of initiative and motivation, as well as innovative and creative problem solving skills when working independently

Strong communication skills (oral and written); comfortable with diverse audiences, including volunteers, Board members, town officials, and others.

Ability to work flexible hours. Willingness to work weekends when needed

Current, or willingness to obtain, first aid and CPR certifications

Commitment to Audubon mission and its conservation goals

Proficient in Microsoft package including Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel. Filemaker knowledge a plus.

Valid Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements: (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)

Ability to conduct programs outdoors in variable weather conditions on uneven and sometimes hilly terrain.  Must be able to stand or walk for four hours at a time.

Ability to lift, push, move and carry up to 40 lbs.

Relationships:

Internal: Report to Audubon Greenwich Center Director.  Work with Audubon Greenwich staff (particularly other Environmental Education Specialists), Audubon Connecticut staff, and National Audubon Society staff, as well as the Audubon Greenwich Stewardship Board.

External: Work with local schools and school districts, teachers, and other school and education personnel.  Communicate with Town of Greenwich officials, and state and local Department of Education staff, staff and volunteers of other environmental and education groups and non-profits, local residents, volunteers, and visitors.
