Description

At the end of the summer, over 200 people signed a petition asking for courses about FOOD, FOOD SYSTEMS and basic AGRICULTURE.
The petition also expressed a desire to FARM at the college. The college is ready to plow the field next to the community garden and start the FARM.
Great classes have been proposed.  We are ready to launch FOOD STUDIES at the college.

WE NEED YOU!!!!!!!!!
WE NEED YOU!!!!!!!

We held a meeting a couple of nights ago and spoke with about 40 students about the FARM and SUMMER COURSES.
We talked about Fall and Spring courses relating to FOOD. This will be an ongoing course of study, and could lead to a concentration at some point.
The immediate question is this: How many students will commit to taking a summer course?
We need students to pay for the summer courses or we won’t be able to pay the farmer.  We had a great, enthusiastic showing, AND,
we need about 20 more students to commit before we plow up the field.

HOW SUMMER WILL WORK:
This how we think it will basically work:  There will be a 5 week summer session.  Students can take one intensive course for 4 units.  Cost will be $750 a unit.

Tuition discounts are being discussed, and are very likely to be granted.  The college wants these classes to happen.  There is so much interest in FOOD STUDIES that the college will do everything it can to make sure students can take the course. Professor Kris Feder helped run the meeting, and she is proposing a wonderful course called, WHAT DO WE EAT AND WHY DO WE EAT IT?   There are a number of other terrific course proposals as well, and most of them are food related.
Students taking a summer course can live on campus, and ResLife will try to put everyone in the same dorm with a good kitchen.

Everyone can eat for free out of the FARM.  Everyone in Kris’s course, and perhaps the other courses being offered this summer, will be required to put hours into the FARM.

Summer at the college is wonderful. We’ll be building an outdoor bread oven. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about farming and study at the same time.

TO DO NOW:
Before the field is plowed up, we need to know if you are in.
Will you take a summer course about food systems?
Will you take one of the other courses being offered?

Email Paul Marienthal at [email protected]
