The Environmental Planner III leads, plans, and reviews projects. This includes providing timely, accurate, and cost efficient professional environmental planning, project, and management services in the office and in the field for both KLJ internal practice areas and external clientele. This individual will direct, coordinate, and supervise environmental staff. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices.

Responsibilities

Provide services for environmental projects to include overall project management of environmental documentation, agency coordination, field services and reports, impact assessment, legal compliance and sufficiency, permits, project budgets, scope of services, contracts, schedules, data collection, and coordination of subconsultants.

Document preparation includes:

* Direct and review NEPA documents (CAT-EX, EA, EIS) for Type I, II, and III projects.

* Field services specifically may include botanical inventories, wildlife inventories, migratory birds and raptors, and wetland delineation.

* Provide environmental services with accuracy, ensuring legal compliance, on time and under budget.

* Coordination of marketing strategy, sales, and internal education.

* Provide direction and review for and support to the group by leading environmental aspects of projects; instructing, training, and mentoring group members and support staff; and adhering to project budget and schedule.

* Provide quality control and quality assurance on all project work.

* Supervise and monitor client relationship strategies.

* Marketing responsibilities with clients to obtain work for the firm, prepares forecast of workload for assigned staff and closely monitors backlog.

* Confer with project team members and clients to lead, prepare, and participate in project proposals and interviews.

* Coordinate, facilitate, and attend internal and external meetings.

* Client contact and communication. Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public.

* Public involvement includes speaking and meeting with stakeholders as well as working with staff to produce reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material.

* The NEPA process requires an interdisciplinary approach; therefore, creating a strong team with project engineers, planners, and the other professional staff is essential for success of these projects.

* Must work both independently and with other planners and outside groups. This includes directing, supervising, and reviewing document preparation, impact assessment, permits and legal compliance for environmental staff members and projects.

* Provide all services in a legal and ethical manner.

* Effectively deal with difficult situations and confrontation both internally and externally with contractors and clients.

* Exercise independent thinking, creativity, and initiative in the performance of these duties.

* Perform all responsibilities with attention to detail and deadlines.

* Must project a professional, positive attitude and exercise confidentiality.

* Understand, interpret, participate in, and implement company-mandated safety policies.

* Travel is required; may work overtime, as needed to complete the required task.

 

Requirements

A Masters degree is preferred. A Bachelors degree in environmental studies, natural resources, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university and 10 years of experience is required. Previous experience with a consulting firm in project management, policy and regulatory planning, and NEPA expertise is preferred. The individual must interact with people at all levels and communicate effectively. Strong computer skills, detail-oriented, self-starter, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential. A valid drivers license if required.

Language: Read, write, and interpret documents and interact with co-workers. Effectively present information to specified groups or individuals.

Math: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning: Apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other: Operate a computer working in database, word processing, and other various software programs. Must have excellent analytical, multitasking, organizational, written communication, and oral communication skills.
