Description

You are invited by The Common Fire Foundation to
apply to a new Certificate Program in Sustainable Community Living.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis starting in November 2011, and monthly trainings will begin in January 2012. Participants will receive training and direct living experience in the most timely and critical areas related to promoting sustainability, justice, and joy in our personal lives and in the world. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice what they are learning while living at the Tivoli Co-op as a full community participant.

The program will consist of twenty all-day workshops held over a period of 2 years. Trainings will be held at the serene Tivoli Housing Co-op in the Hudson
River Valley. The trainings will address a wide range of skills and
knowledge directly relevant to living in communities, working
successfully in groups, being effective agents for change in the world,
and leading a rewarding and meaningful life.

Participants will live together in the Tivoli Housing Co-op in what has been
certified as the highest scoring green building in the Eastern United
States. Costs associated with the program are included as a benefit to
living at the Tivoli Co-op. A limited number of people who do not reside
at the Tivoli Co-op will be invited to attend trainings and may be
invited into the Certificate Program. Participants in the Certificate
Program will also complete a year-end project that addresses their joys
and interests with a deeper engagement.

The goals of the Certificate Program in Sustainable Community Living are broad:

  • The
ability to work well in diverse groups, to be an active facilitator in a
consensus decision-making process, and to effectively handle conflict.
  • Awareness of how to live lightly on
the earth and in just relationships, with a deeper sense of connection
with a place and its history and ecology.
  • Experience growing and storing food in ways that
are ecologically sustainable or restorative, and an understanding of
the major goals and strategies of the food justice movement.
  • Clarity of our own vision for our
lives and the role we wish to play in supporting sustainability and
    justice in the world.
  • Knowledge of ourselves and the ways we
    respond to challenging situations.
  • The ability to maintain our personal
health and well-being through healthy eating, physical activity,
    mindfulness and stress-reduction, and play.
  • An understanding of how personal
transformation is fundamental to  transformation in the world, and of
the role intentional communities can play in both of those
    transformations.
  • The ability to effectively impact the
political system, both locally and beyond.
  • A cache of fundraising strategies
appropriate to different projects and organizations, and a healthy
    personal relationship to money.
