About EDF Climate Corps
EDF Climate Corps (www.edfclimatecorps.org) places specially-trained MBA and MPA students in companies, cities, and universities to build the business case for energy efficiency.
Buildings consume 70% of electricity in the U.S. and emit more than a third of greenhouse gases. Office buildings alone account for about 200 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of 43 coal-fired power plants. McKinsey & Co. estimates that by 2020, the U.S. could reduce its annual energy consumption by 23% through energy efficiency measures; this would cut greenhouse gas emissions by over a gigaton and save over a trillion dollars. However, organizational barriers like lack of bandwidth and expertise, competing operational priorities, and disincentives for working across departmental boundaries are preventing us from doing so.
EDF Climate Corps seeks to overcome these barriers and cut greenhouse gas emissions today while training tomorrow’s leaders to create value through environmental initiatives. Focusing on commercial buildings in corporations, cities and universities, EDF Climate Corps fellows deliver a compelling business case for energy efficiency, and move organizations toward cutting energy consumption, capturing savings, and reducing emissions.
The heart of the program is the EDF Climate Corps fellow. We will train you and place you in a company, city or university to serve as a champion of energy efficiency for the summer, analyzing energy-saving opportunities and developing customized energy efficiency investment plans.
EDF Climate Corps has grown from seven fellows in 2008 to 96 in 2011, and has expanded to include engagements in corporations, cities and universities (mainly minority-serving institutions).
It is an ideal opportunity for students interested in sustainability, energy, CSR, operations or consulting who are looking for an on-the-ground internship experience driving environmental change within a large organization.
EDF provides the following training and resources throughout your summer:
– 3 to 4-day training in energy efficiency strategies for commercial buildings and data centers
– EDF Climate Corps Handbook
– Summer Call series with experts on topics relevant to fellow workplans
– Fellow check-in calls facilitated by EDF to share best practices
– Access to online forums, collaboration tools, EDF experts, and up-to-date energy efficiency resources
– A network of current and future sustainability leaders across sectors and regions that will last beyond the summer
Participating organizations will be at different points along the path of developing an overall greenhouse gas and energy management strategy; some will require strategic guidance about long-term carbon management and meeting voluntary obligations in addition to an energy efficiency investment plan for one or more of their building(s). Past host companies include Accenture, adidas, AT&T, Bloomberg, Citizen’s Bank, eBay Inc., facebook, Grubb Properties, Houston Rockets/Toyota Center, PepsiCo, REI, Target, Union Pacific, Verizon, and Yahoo!.
Past host cities include the City of Atlanta, City of Raleigh, New York City Housing Authority, Township of Middleton, NJ, and the Township of Ocean, NJ.
Past host universities include Bennett College, Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Morehouse School of Medicine, North Carolina Central University, Spelman College, and University of Texas – El Paso.
Since the program began, EDF Climate Corps fellows have uncovered energy efficiency opportunities that could:
* Cut 1.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity use and 27 million therms of natural gas annually, equivalent to the annual energy use of 88,000 homes;
* Avoid over 1 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the annual emissions of 200,000 passenger vehicles; and
* Save $1 billion in net operational costs over the project lifetimes.
To date, companies report that projects representing 86 percent of the energy savings identified by EDF Climate Corps fellows are complete or underway. Each year brings new validation of our hypothesis that a smart and resourceful young leader – armed with analytical skills, relevant training, and a single-minded focus on energy efficiency – can overcome institutional barriers to energy efficiency.

Selected duties may include:
* Gathering detailed data about partner company’s existing energy usage through interviews with key employees, observation, outside vendors and professional energy audits
* Modeling financial impact of energy efficiency investments in lighting, office equipment, and HVAC
* Presenting the business case for energy efficiency investments to senior management
* Advising on overall greenhouse gas management and sustainability strategies, including how to educate and engage building occupants
Training: 3 days in Mid-May 2012; attendance is mandatory

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications
– Superior oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
– Self-starter with strong project management experience
– Graduate-level experience in finance, economics or related quantitative analysis
– Consulting, corporate advisory or large company experience
– Eligibility to work in the United States during the summer 2012
– Resourcefulness and ability to work both independently and on cross-functional teams
Preferred qualifications
– MBA or MPA candidate and/or graduate
– Engineering background
– Demonstrated experience working on energy efficiency, energy or sustainability projects or initiatives
– Familiarity with climate change and energy issues
– Environmental passion
