SAGA is a statewide Service Corps dedicated to fulfilling our mission by providing high-quality services throughout Alaska. The focus of providing job training, experiential education, and leadership opportunities to young people has grown over the years into five SAGA programs: the Serve Alaska Youth Corps (SAYC); the Alaska Service Corps (ASC); Young Alaskans Building Affordable Housing (YABAH); the Connections Individual Placement Program; and the Eagle Valley Center (EVC).

Description:

he Field Coordinator (FC) organizes the day-to-day operations of the Corps’ projects. They ensure that the Corps’ projects are completed on time and according to specifications, in collaboration with Team Leaders and the Northern Regional Manager. The FC prepares and implements necessary training modules for the Team Leaders and Corps Members, with an emphasis on hard skills (for example, hand tools and chainsaw training). They regularly visit crews at project sites to ensure quality of work, meet with on-site sponsors, and provide respite to Team Leaders. Working closely with the Education Coordinators, they help Team Leaders and Corps Members achieve their personal goals. The FC establishes and enforces the procedures of SAGA’s risk management program.

The crews live and operate outdoors in all weather conditions. Road safety improvements, invasive plant species removal, and trail work are common projects. Other projects include stream restoration and recreational cabin maintenance. Field Coordinators must be skilled in performing and leading these types of projects and must be completely at ease in both front-country and backcountry settings.

This position is scheduled to be located in Juneau, AK, for training for the months of February, March and April, after which time the position will be located in Indian, AK. Housing will be provided to the successful candidate while in Juneau.

Responsibilities:

Program Management:
• Directs activities of the Corps crews, in collaboration with the Northern Regional Manager;
• Oversees projects to assure compliance with specifications;
• Adheres to AmeriCorps regulations;
• Participates in regular Corps Staff Team meetings;
• Ensures that any conflicts between crews and sponsors are handled professionally and immediately;
• Maintains regular contact with on-site project sponsors, prior to and during assigned projects;
• Demonstrates professionalism while representing SAGA and serves as a role model for Corps crews;
• Other duties as assigned.

Equipment/Materials Management:
• Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of tools, vehicles and other necessary equipment;
• Manages and enforces policies and procedures that apply to tools/equipment, risk management, and vehicles;
• Ensures safe work procedures are followed and proposes necessary changes, when identified;
• Oversees tool/equipment inventories and budgets;
• Ensures that necessary equipment and materials are available on schedule.

Supervision and Training:
• Serves as primary supervisor of Team Leaders;
• Oversees supervision of all Corps crews in the region;
• Organizes and implements Team Leader and Corps Member orientations and training, in concert with the Corps Staff Team;
• Serves as the primary point of contact for 4-6 Corps crews and acts as a Team Leader when needed;
• Visits crews regularly to inspect camps, maintain morale, and provide assistance to Team Leaders;
• Performs and trains others on all activities required of current projects;
• Provides remote/field technical assistance where needed;
• Mediates conflicts between Corps Members as they arise.

Documentation:
• Assists Northern Regional Manager in creation and dissemination of project specifications;
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all documents pertaining to each season’s projects (agreements, specifications, timelines, budgets);
• Assists Team Leaders in tracking and reporting project activities and progress;
• Assists Education Coordinator in reporting of educational activities.

Qualifications
• Two years college, vocational/technical training, or work experience in trail work, power-tool operation and maintenance, carpentry, resource management or outdoor leadership
• High school diploma or GED
• Wilderness First Responder certification
• Experience with operation and maintenance of power tools (chainsaws, brushers) and hand tools
• Experience with field repair of the tools noted above
• Experience training others in safe use of power tools and hand tools
• Knowledge of instructional methods in motivational techniques, group dynamics, and conflict resolution
• Experience in trail building and wilderness cabin construction
• Backpacking and Leave No Trace camping knowledge/skills and experience teaching these
• Experience working with youth in outdoor environments
• Knowledge of Alaska’s regional climates and its consequent opportunities and challenges
• Valid driver’s license, clean driving record (no DUI convictions in the last five years) and experience operating fleet vehicles
• Able to pass criminal records check
• Valid U.S. passport or resident alien permit

Qualifications/Skills:

Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to function efficiently, independently, and under pressure. Willing to maintain a flexible schedule during SAGA’s Corps season. Ability to effectively communicate and work with a variety of individuals and agencies. Ability to establish rapport with young people, as well as organize and direct them. Ability to maintain neat and accurate records/reports. Proficient with basic software (MS Word, Excel, Access, etc.) and computers. Must thrive in, as well as foster, team-based work models.

Benefits:

Full time, seasonal (February – December).
Salary & Benefits: $2,300 – $2,900/month, DOE; healthcare benefits; paid leave; government holidays.
