Description
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder has an immediate opening for a professional research assistant position in the Physical Sciences Division of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory. This person will support research over a range of climate-related topics, many focusing on role of clouds and radiation in the Earth’s climate across a range of scales.
The tasks are a mix of the routine (making a large set of forecasts with a numerical model and analyzing the results, for example) and the exploratory (i.e. working to understand why multiple observations of the same clouds provide different results). Several projects involve working with output from many different climate models to diagnose processes responsible for climate change and climate extremes, which will entail processing and analyzing large volumes of data. Others involve the development of algorithms and diagnostics for numerical models.
We are looking for applicants with excellent computational and organizational skills who are comfortable with basic statistical and analytic techniques. Experience with graphical, statistical, and visualization tools (e.g., NCL, R, Matlab, IDL) and scripting (e.g. Python) is an advantage, as are good oral and written communication skills. Applicants with strong coding skills (Fortran 9x under Unix/Linux) are especially encouraged. Candidates should be comfortable working independently, within the local group, and with external collaborators, as a given task requires.
A BS or MS in atmospheric science or a related discipline (including computational fields) is required.
