Organization Overview

TD Bank NA is the US subsidiary of the Toronto-Dominion Financial Group, which is a multi-line of service financial institution based in Toronto.  TD Bank NA has been growing rapidly and is currently one of the top ten banks in the US.  TD Bank NA has a high level of commitment to being an environmental leader.  In support of this objective, a new department called Environmental Affairs was created in July 2011. TD Bank NA is already a recognized environmental leader:  TD has been named a Top Environmental performer in the North American Banking sector for two years running by Sustainalytics and one of four 2010 Green Power Partners of the Year by the EPA.  In the last two years alone, TD Bank has achieved outstanding environmental accomplishments, including opening the nation’s first net-zero energy store, becoming the first large North American Bank to go carbon neutral and introducing closed-loop paper recycling. Environmental Affairs’ objectives are to 1) build out TD Bank NA’s environmental strategy across all lines of business 2) champion, co-ordinate and project manage TD Bank NA’s environmental initiatives 3) lead efforts to engage NGOs, and direct sponsorships and grants around key environmental themes 4) identify linkages with other departments within TD Bank NA 5) drive employee engagement in environmental activities, and 6) develop TD Bank NA’s external environmental message and serve as TD Bank NA’s environmental spokesperson externally.  Environmental Affairs works closely with the “Green Council,” which is comprised of senior leaders from across the bank who are championing environmental initiatives throughout TD Bank NA.

Description/ Responsibilities

Project Management:  The intern will be a core team member of Environmental Affairs utilizing skills in (1) project management, (2) business analysis and (3) team leadership.  He/she will take responsibility for critical components of ongoing environmental initiatives sponsored by the department.  Intern will help the recently formed Environmental Affairs team track and integrate existing projects, while finding opportunities to increase collaboration across the Lines of Business at TD Bank NA. Intern will be expected to use strategic planning in all projects.

 

Social Media:  Intern should be familiar with social media outlets in order to promote the use of social media to further employee engagement on issues of environment. In particular, candidate will help drive the integration of environment into TD Bank NA’s internal social media vehicles. Sponsorship opportunities:  Candidate will also be responsible for:  evaluating TD Bank NA’s environmental sponsorship opportunities, prioritizing critical environmental themes and NGO partners, and engaging with NGOs in support of TD Bank NA’s open door policy with NGOs, and coordinating Environmental Affairs’ interaction with Community Relations.

 

Other:  Candidate will also receive additional ad hoc assignments and must be willing to balance administrative tasks with substantial projects. This will require the ability to multi-task, move easily from one project to another with some depth.  There are ongoing short, medium and long term deadlines that must be balanced. Some travel may be required.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual passionate about environmental issues and the role of the private sector. The intern will have exposure to senior executives at TDBNA and have mentorship opportunities. In addition, the Intern will gain an in-depth understanding of how a uniquely consensus-oriented bank works. The Intern will have access to many resources in order to successfully complete projects and tasks.

Qualifications/Skills

Academic requirements:

  • Graduate-level degree
  • Interest, preferably knowledge and demonstrated ability in sustainable development and environmental issues
  • Superior quantitative skills
  • Exceptional writing skills

 

Work experience requirements:

  • Project management experience
  • Business analysis skills
  • Team leadership experience
  • Some demonstrated ability and/or experience in an environmental capacity
  • Strong NGO relationships
  • Powerpoint, Excel, Word
  • Familiarity with social media

 

Interpersonal and team skills:

  • Willingness to take on any challenge – including those that are specifically not glamorous/administrative in nature — but important to the team
  • Ability to work independently
  • Enjoys dynamic and changing situations
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated with history of accomplishment

Location:

·         Internship is based in TD Bank NA’s US headquarters in Mt. Laurel, NJ (about 20 minutes outside Philadelphia)

·         Internship location is subject to discussion but could be based in Portland, ME or potentially NYC
