Description: In order to expand the capacity of its experienced team, Urban Green is creating the position of Research Manager. The Research Manager reports to the Director of Research and may oversee other Urban Green staff as well as interns, consultants, and/or research fellows. As part of the Research team, the Research Manager will participate in setting the team’s strategic direction and in coordinating with the Advocacy and Public Programs teams.
The Manager will identify, initiate, and execute projects that drive the market for deep energy retrofits and next-generation buildings. The Manager will also manage projects identified and initiated by the Research Director. Working with experts from the world’s most sophisticated real estate firms and consultancies, the manager will coordinate receiving advice on content and the performance of critical research functions such as fieldwork and energy modeling. The Manager will have a central organizing role throughout the research, from project conception through careful framing, to maximize impact with the buildings industry, the general public and the press. This position will provide broad exposure to leading thinkers in urban sustainability and the opportunity to have a significant impact on the future of New York City.
Responsibilities:
- Direct research initiatives with guidance from the Research Director; assist the Research Director in executing other projects. Future research initiatives may include:
- Pathways to deep carbon reductions for NYC’s building stock
- Barriers and opportunities to specific retrofits
- Annual reports on NYC benchmarking and audit/retrocommissioning data
- Manage research process, including
- Generating ideas for potential research projects, coordinating with the Advocacy Department, the Urban Green strategic plan, and industry and government stakeholders;
- Selecting projects based upon likelihood to create change, amenability to clear messaging, impact on citywide environmental performance, and the current state of industry knowledge and practice;
- Developing the project research plan, including key questions to be answered, the research process that will answer them, budget and other resources;
- Identifying and obtaining resources necessary to complete the project: coordinate with the Development Department on grants and other funding; develop and administer RFPs for consultants; prepare contracts and agreements; invite and manage advisory committees; hire and supervise in-house resources such as Research Fellows;
- Providing project management throughout process, meeting schedule and budget;
- Coordinating with the Communications and Public Programs Departments on press, public events and other dissemination of the work;
- Working with the Advocacy Department to develop policy recommendations based upon the research results.
- Advise Research Director on annual departmental goal-setting.
- Manage research budgets and project agreements.
- Supervise interns, consultants, and volunteer committees.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or a related physical science field; master’s degree a plus
- At least 6 years’ work experience, including 4-5 years in green building
- Strong understanding of building science as applied in both the residential and commercial sectors
- Familiarity with building codes, particularly the energy code
- Quantitative understanding of energy use metrics, embodied energy, carbon emissions, waste and water systems and indoor air quality
- Field experience in energy assessments, construction, retrofits, operations and maintenance, or real estate
- Considerable experience in project management including management of multiple projects, including those that involve consultants
- Some experience with statistical methods
- Strong report writing and presentation skills
- Demonstrated history of initiative, creativity, and independent project management
- Outstanding interpersonal, organizational and computer skills

Position Title: Solar Ambassador Intern

Description: RE-volv is looking for driven, creative, and passionate college students to help spread solar around the country. The Solar Ambassador Program is a fellowship for one academic year that gives college students the opportunity to spearhead a solar project in their community using RE-volv’s innovative solar financing model. From each university RE-volv seeks a Solar Ambassador team of four or more students, though applications with fewer than four students will still be considered. To apply for the fellowship the team must identify a community center or campus building that they want to solarize and have a representative of the facility indicate interest in participating in the program. The teams most poised for success will be awarded the fellowship. Throughout the duration of the fellowship, teams will work with RE-volv to bring their proposed solar projects to completion. Member agencies work together by mutual consensus to manage the estimated 296 square kilometers of coral reefs with the vision “to protect and conserve reefs for the benefit of the people of American Samoa, the United States, and the world.”

- Maintain and improve the quality of CRAG’s climate change-related programming through continuous improvement, adaptive management, and prioritization of actions and efforts.
- Act as point of contact for CRAG member agencies for climate change-related activities;
- Support ongoing science and research projects related to coral reefs and climate change within American Samoa, including supporting and liaising with local and off-island scientists to develop and implement projects related to coral reef resilience, taimasa, ocean acidification, and other impacts related to climate change;
- Communicate climate change, associated impacts, and potential solutions to local stakeholders such as decision-makers, community members, and staff.
- Facilitate strategic partnerships in the field of climate change for program implementation, resource mobilization, learning and advocacy at local, regional, and national levels.

NY4P regularly hosts interns to assist with research & planning projects relating to the efficient and equitable delivery of public park services in New York City. Interns will spend time conducting research and writing on open space planning issues and will also be asked to assist with field work, other outreach and advocacy work and other organizational activities as needed.

Starting in the summer of 2015, NY4P will be launching two major research project fieldwork sessions, culminating with data analysis and report writing in the fall. This position will support NY4P staff by conducting fieldwork, collecting physical data, and contributing to the writing and editing of the project reports.
The Open Space Index is a set of 15 population-adjusted targets for park access and environmental sustainability designed specifically for New York City neighborhoods. NY4P will conduct an open space assessment of the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn using our OSI methodology.
In response to the city’s commitment to implement physical, maintenance, and programming improvements at a group of historically under-funded parks across the five boroughs through the NYC Parks Department Community Parks Initiative (CPI), NY4P will be conducting a baseline Inventory of CPI Sites. This Inventory, which will be conducted based on Report Card on Parks methodology used by NY4P since 2002 to track maintenance and safety conditions at sites across the city, will provide baseline data against which future conditions at these parks will be measured.
This position’s scope of work includes the following:
- Collecting field data for NY4P’s Brownsville OSIand Inventory of CPI SitesOSI fieldwork requires block-by-block canvassing to assess and measure each open space in Brownsville. For the Inventory, the physical survey will include precise documentation of open space conditions using tablet computers and digital cameras. Fieldwork for both projects may also include in-person interviews with park visitors and systematic social observation of park use.
- Creating maps to support the Open Space Indexand Inventory data collection and analysis.
- Gathering supplemental neighborhood data, including US Census data and land use patterns.
