We are currently seeking fall interns interested in fighting for safe food, clean water, and healthy oceans. This position typically runs at least 10 weeks, for 15 hours per week. Current student standing is not necessary. We operate in a relaxed office environment in Washington, DC, metro accessible.

Responsibilities

  •  Track news and research relating to market-based environmental programs and proposals.
  •  Assist in ongoing research and updates to database of existing market-based environmental programs.

General Job responsibilities:

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing and assisting with ongoing campaigns related to coal plants and regional utilities including collaboration on legal, grassroots and media campaigns

  • Identifying opportunities to take action to help achieve closure of certain regional coal plants

  • Conducting general outreach to SACE membership, public, utilities, traditional and untraditional allies and increasing SACE’s membership base in strategic areas

  • Representing the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy in coalitions, working groups, meetings and government hearings
  • Preparing written materials for various audiences including technical papers, fact sheets, blogs and press releases

Qualifications

Candidates must be committed to moving the Southeast off coal-fired power and to support clean energy alternatives. Candidates should work well individually and in groups, should have excellent writing, research, and oral communications skills and a capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Excel or other database programs and must be capable of researching, cataloguing, managing and analyzing environmental, financial and other coal-plant and utility-related data. Leadership and strategic campaign skills desired. Outstanding attention to detail is essential. A Bachelors degree is required and a J.D. or other legal experience is preferred. Candidates should have an understanding of domestic energy issues, a sense of the energy dynamics in the Southeast and general knowledge on clean energy opportunities for the region. Ability to work in challenging, fast-paced and often adversarial conditions is a must.

Description

The Regional Coordinator will act as a member of Waterkeeper Alliance’s staff and will report directly to the National Director. The Regional Coordinator will work to support regional Waterkeepers, coordinate regional campaigns, initiatives, and advocacy efforts of Waterkeeper Alliance and work to build the movement within the region. While the Coordinator will have an emphasis on work in the western region, the Coordinator’s work will include duties that benefit the Waterkeeper movement as a whole.

Responsibilities

  1. Create and pursue opportunities to advance the collective image, exposure and prestige of Waterkeeper programs;
  2. Work to build the Waterkeeper movement within the region;
  3. Host and facilitate working groups of regional Waterkeeper programs;
  4. Alert programs to outreach, training, fundraising or legislative opportunities as they arise;
  5. Provide liaison assistance as needed to help Waterkeeper programs gain access to opinion leaders and decision makers;
  6. Provide an external affairs link between the shared interests of regional Waterkeeper programs and other allied groups,
  7. Assist Waterkeeper programs to identify meaningful opportunities to raise funds jointly, including on a sub-regional basis;
  8. Provide assistance to Waterkeeper programs by providing staff support for approved joint initiatives;
  9. Help to solve problems and to launch projects that benefit multiple Waterkeeper programs;
  10. Conduct fundraising activities with the expectation of meeting certain goals;
  11. Engage in other fundraising opportunities where possible;
  12. Equitably assist individual Waterkeepers when practical to strengthen their ability to effect change;
  13. Engage in regular communication with other Waterkeeper Alliance regional staff to share best practices and ensure consistent service;
  14. Execute a work plan with metrics;
  15. Engage in other duties assigned by the Executive Director or National Director.

Note: While the Coordinator will, as a practical matter, be based in one location, he or she will be expected to provide support and assistance to all of the Waterkeeper organizations in the region. The Coordinator must reach out and be accessible to all of the Western Waterkeeper Organizations, with some travel required.

Qualifications

The Coordinator position will require a very broad skill set. Given the unique structure of this collaborative effort, the Coordinator will also need to be self-motivated, confident and able to work without direct supervision. At the same time, he or she will have to be an excellent communicator, listener and facilitator, and able to balance and represent various Waterkeeper positions and interests. It is expected that this position will be in regular contact with Waterkeeper Alliance staff and with the regional Waterkeepers. The Coordinator will need:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree, at minimum, along with two or more years of relevant experience;
  2. Knowledge, experience and background with water quality issues and policy;
  3. A demonstrated ability to interact effectively with others;
  4. Familiarity with or the ability to readily adapt to the Waterkeeper culture and model;
  5. Experience with team building and facilitating group processes;
  6. Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
  7. To be charismatic, likeable, and simpatico; and
  8. To be persuasive and a consensus builder with lots of energy.

• Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit WVRC to carry out its work and mission.

Qualifications

• A graduate degree in a related field (or undergraduate degree with equivalent work experience).
• Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to environmental/conservation issues; particularly related to water, energy and natural resources.
• At least 5 years’ experience managing a nonprofit organization or equivalent work/management experience.
• At least 5 years’ experience writing and managing grants.

The Youth Empowerment Internship supports the Foundation’s youth initiatives for social change and justice. These initiatives re intended to educate young people in the issues of social injustice and the need for change, and to involve as many of them as possible in the processes of grant making, organizing for change, and fundraising for social change.

The Youth Empowerment Intern will work with TRCF’s Internship Fellow(s) and the Executive Director to develop, promote, implement, maintain, and evaluate the youth component of TRCF’s programming and activities. Responsibilities include:

MACED’s Energy Efficient Enterprises (E3) program works to promote energy efficiency to small businesses, county and local governments and nonprofits located in Appalachian Kentucky by offering consulting services and other resources to ensure that businesses are operating as energy efficiently as possible.

Description

MACED seeks to hire a motivated individual to join its staff as an energy intern. The goal of this thirty-five week (eight month), thirty two hour a week internship is to provide work experience to a person interested in energy efficiency in Kentucky while also providing MACED’s energy programs with qualified, reliable help. The internship will enable the candidate to get a good grasp of the challenges and rewards of doing energy efficiency work in a rural setting in which several electric utilities operate. The candidate will have the benefit of working with experienced professionals and a Certified Energy Manager as well as other MACED staff. In turn, MACED will get assistance with daily work in Energy Efficient Enterprises, and will occasionally receive support on other program work as needed by MACED’s How$martKY and Forestry programs.

This is a term position intended to fully develop and launch the District’s Land Conservation programming. Responsibilities

  • Research/write/edit articles and web content on a broad range of energy, environment, and policy issues
  • Assist with the outreach for and execution of Congressional briefings and events
  • Data entry and other administrative duties
  • Update website and social media profiles
  • Explore creative ways to engage and expand EESI’s network
  • Research appropriate media outlets
  • Occasionally attend Congressional hearings or other events and brief staff on material covered
  • Other responsibilities as required, based on intern interest areas and the organization’s needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (or degree in progress) in communications, journalism, political science, environmental studies, or a related field. Please note that this a communications position and so applicants with media experience or education will be privileged. EESI also offers policy-focused internships
  • Interest in environmental and energy issues, with particular enthusiasm for the communication of pertinent information to policymakers and other interested parties
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Open to feedback, with strong desire to develop professional skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
  • Ability to represent EESI professionally at events on Capitol Hill
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Photoshop, database and web software, video editing and/or online social media a plus

• Time Commitment: up to 5 days/week; maximum 35 hrs/week

Description

Outdoor environmental teaching positions include working with students K-8 from Southern
Arizona public and private schools to encourage the hands-on learning and exploration of the Sonoran Desert. Training is provided based on the Cooper Center’s Mission Statement and the ideals of the Institute for Earth Education in order to “emphasize understanding of basic ecological processes, develop positive feelings for the natural world, and make personal lifestyle changes.”

Responsibilities

• Lead and assist several educational programs in outdoor settings (program training provided).
o Sunship III (Grades 6-8): This 3 day, 2 night program gives middle schoolers experiences that allow them to personally connect with the natural world and gain knowledge of how their life choices can impact it. This program is a coming of age celebration that offers each student a chance to make decisions and take responsibility for their choices and actions. Program components focus on energy flow, cycling of materials, interrelationships in nature, finding natural beauty, and the impacts of humans on the planet Earth. Program runs October – December.
o Earthkeepers (Grades 4-5): This 3 day, 2 night program gives upper elementary students the opportunity to gain knowledge about how the Earth functions and to experience the wonders of the desert, earning keys to unlock secrets along the way. Program components focus on energy flow, cycling of materials, interrelationships, and change over time. Program runs January through March.
o Day programs (Grades K-8): On these days, teaching duties will occur during the morning and early afternoon with the later afternoon left for other center responsibilities. Each grade level has differentiated curriculum. Examples include discovery and exploration of the Sonoran Desert, basic ecological concepts, understanding ecosystems, and plant and animal adaptations for survival. Programs run March through May.
• Assist in light facility maintenance (picking up trash, cleaning, etc.)
• Participate in program-related tasks including planning, setup, materials design and maintenance.
• Assist with field experience logistics including group arrivals and departures and managing students and adults during trips.

Qualifications

Required:

Enthusiasm, eagerness to help students learn about the natural world, strong communication skills, a positive attitude, ability to work hard as part of a team and independently, physical conditioning and love for working outdoors in a desert setting.

Preferred:

Degree in Environmental Studies, Education, or a related field; teaching experience; a flair for being theatrical.
