Description

Portland’s Environmental Services bureau works for clean rivers, healthy watersheds, and livable communities. Outreach and education programs are critical to gaining the citizen involvement necessary to achieve these goals. In partnership with the Confluence Environmental Center (CEC), the AmeriCorps member will assist the Grey to Green Urban Canopy Program in developing urban forest and sustainable stormwater capacity in low-canopy, low-income parts of the city of Portland.

Responsibilities

  • Support the bureau’s sustainable stormwater goals by encouraging citizen investment and stewardship in clean rivers and healthy watersheds.
  • Develop and implement an outreach strategy for sustainable stormwater management that includes education, technical support, and a suite of incentives from multiple bureau program areas.
  • Determine capacity for increasing urban forest canopy in low-canopy, low-income parts of the city of Portland.
  • Serve closely with the city and its partners and act as liaison between the city and interested neighborhoods, community and business groups, and individuals.
  • Complete and submit all necessary Confluence/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
  • Attend and complete all Confluence/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, training’s, team meetings and national service days.
  • Wear Confluence uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Qualifications

Overview

Description

The Senior Biologist must effectively and efficiently strategize and manage hatchery and habitat programs and projects associated with Grant PUD’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license requirements to protect, mitigate and enhance the aquatic and terrestrial resources of the Priest Rapids Project. The Senior Biologist designs and implements robust monitoring and evaluation studies; conducts technical analyses; prepares, reviews and presents technical reports and peer-reviewed publications; develops and manages program budgets and contracts; and effectively interacts with internal project teams and external agency and technical representatives.

Responsibilities

The Senior Biologist must be able to provide technical assistance to the Hatchery/Habitat Program Supervisor in meeting the requirements included in Grant PUD’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission License Order and associated agreements.

The Senior Biologist must have working knowledge of fish biology, salmonid culture and hatchery management.

This position must effectively design and implement studies to ensure that meaningful information is collected and managed.

The Senior Biologist will design and implement data collection and monitoring and evaluation activities within a variety of fisheries, wildlife and water quality programs and effectively and efficiently report, analyze and present technical analyses.

This position requires knowledge of scientific research methodology; Columbia Basin fisheries, wildlife, and water quality issues; fish culture, botanical, water quality, biometrics, and sampling techniques; and have experience with federal, state, tribal and local laws, rules, and regulations and processes pertinent to fisheries and related environmental sciences including the Endangered Species Act, National Environment Policy Act, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission licensing, and the Clean Water Act.

The Senior Biologist must be able to communicate in a clear, concise, and scientifically accurate manner when providing verbal and written technical information.

The Senior Biologist must negotiate and work collaboratively with agency and tribal fisheries representatives and internal staff and/or other Divisions to accomplish requirements in a scientifically sound and cost-efficient manner.

The Senior Biologist must have the skills and relationships necessary to achieve positive outcomes for Grant PUD as a District representative to required consultation committees such as the Priest Rapids Coordinating Committee (PRCC), the PRCC Hatchery and Habitat Subcommittees, the Priest Rapids Fish Forum (PRFF), Fall Chinook Work Group (FCWG), and/or other designated technical committees.

The Senior Biologist must have the project management skills necessary to strategize, innovate, coordinate and implement large, long-term projects (including budgets, schedules and contracts) in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

The Senior Biologist position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries or related Environmental Sciences.

A Master’s Degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

The Senior Biologist must have a minimum five years of experience in environmental issues, including experience with anadromous salmonids and resident fish.

Specific experience with fish culture, hatchery management practices, and monitoring and evaluation is necessary.

Additional experience on the effects of hydroelectric generation on aquatic resources, wildlife, and water quality, such as fish passage at dams and water quality, wildlife, and fish passage/habitat within dam reservoirs is preferred.

A Master’s Degree may substitute for two years of experience and a PhD may substitute for four years of experience.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The Senior Biologist is required to have a working knowledge of statistics, data manipulation and management, be computer literate, and have a basic understanding of water hydraulics, fish passage, fish protection facilities at dams, terrestrial (wildlife and botanical) population trends, and basic knowledge of the chemical, physical, and biological properties of the aquatic and terrestrial environment.

The Senior Biologist must have knowledge of anadromous and resident fish biology, habitat evaluation and restoration activities, permitting and compliance regulations, and budget and contract development, management and administration.

It is essential that the Senior Biologist be able to work in a team environment and be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with individuals within Natural Resources and with other Grant PUD divisions (including Hydro Engineering, Facilities, Contracting, etc).

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENT:

The Senior Biologist will be required to perform work of a mixed nature (office and field) that varies by season.

Field activities may require long hours, strenuous activities, and nighttime work.

Extensive regional travel for meetings and field work with regulatory agencies and environmental consultants will be required.

The Senior Biologist must be imaginative and resourceful in high-pressure situations and under adverse working conditions, and be able to use good judgment, be adaptable and flexible, and maintain a positive, highly motivated attitude.

American Conservation Experience is a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the National Park Service Curecanti National Recreation Area/Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (CURE/BLCA).

Description

Curecanti NRA/Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP has a long-standing curriculum-based education program. Since 1985, the program has grown to serve over 5,000 students and 500 teachers and parents annually. There is extensive program for grades K-12 with the majority of outreach conducted in classrooms throughout surrounding communities. Demand for park programming is high and facilitates strong relationships throughout the community.

The position is 40 hours/week. At least one day/week will be dedicated to program/lesson preparation. Up to four days/week will be spent teaching resource-based lessons in schools or leading field trips. Projects include developing new lesson plans, maintaining program statistics, and creating visual aids. Lessons are guided by Colorado state and national standards and emphasize science, language arts, art, mathematics, and physical education.

Responsibilities

In support of the mission of the National Park Service, the fundamental work performed by Education Intern is:

Resource Education – Educating area children, teachers and parents about the significance and uniqueness of park resources, conservation, and ecologically sound practices and the laws, rules, and regulations developed to protect park resources and provide for their safe and non-consumptive use.

Resource Protection – Preserving the natural and cultural resources of the park by preventing degradation of ecosystems, historical structures and artifacts and by preventing the loss and theft of objects, flora, and fauna through information and education.

This will be achieved through the implementation of a curriculum-based education program.

Lessons and field trips are provided at no cost to schools or teachers and classroom teacher evaluates lessons each time they are taught. The NPS Education Specialist also provides coaching throughout the internship, allowing interns the chance for continuous improvement.

The Intern will serve the NPS CURE/BLCA mission by enthusiastically working to fulfill the following responsibilities:

o Provide outreach education programs to pre-K to middle school aged students (60%)

o Program preparation, lesson revision, lesson development, related activities (20%)

o Riding in and driving government vehicles (15%)

o Assistance with office projects and park emergencies (5%)

o Intern will wear the Volunteer in Parks (VIP) uniform

Qualifications

Applicants for the position will hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and/or experience in environmental education, interpretation, biological sciences, natural resource management, education, park management, or a related discipline. The intern will be resourceful, adaptable, and able to work comfortably alone or in a group. The ACE NPS CURE/BLCA Education Intern must be willing and able to represent ACE and the NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.

Requirements:

o Must be a US Citizens or Green Card holder.

Physical Demands: The Education Internship position is high energy and can be stressful, due to the volume of contacts and travel requirements. The position may require driving in rain, snow, on icy roads, before sunrise, and after sunset. It requires working with all ages of children, in any educational setting, as well as with teachers, aids, and parents. The position requires walking up to four miles over uneven terrain at elevation while leading educational groups. Travel to and from schools may cover up to 240 miles per day. Some workdays may exceed 8 hours, but any given workweek should not exceed 40 hours.

 Overview

The Washington DC Office is seeking a legal intern for the Fall 2012 semester. Knowledge on Federal Indian Law in the US and International Law is desirable; as well as Spanish/English skills. Internships are available for all levels of experience, from law students to practicing professionals. Please note that all internships are unpaid. We are flexible in terms of interns’ time commitment

Responsibilities

Interns will mainly contribute to our work by assisting our staff with the following international legal programs:

1) Multilateral Development Banks: Working to encourage responsible lending by holding multilateral development banks responsible for the impacts of their projects on indigenous peoples and the environment. This project will involve research on affected communities, projects, and claims submitted to internal bank inspection mechanisms; preparation of documents concerning the bank’s operational policies on indigenous peoples, and participation in meetings with Bank officials and Civil Society Organizations in Washington DC.

2) Protecting Indigenous Rights in Climate Policies: Advocating for indigenous rights protections within climate policies, especially forest conservation programs. This project involves assisting staff with analysis and commentary on proposed climate policies. Interns will conduct research on the impacts of forest conservation projects and help prepare materials and provide logistical support for trainings with indigenous communities in Mexico, Central, and South America.

3) Draft American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Continuing to press for higher standards in indigenous rights by pushing for a strong and clear American Declaration at the Organization of American States (OAS). Interns will participate in negotiation sessions on the Draft American Declaration and meetings between OAS Member States and indigenous delegations, provide legal counsel for indigenous representatives from throughout the Americas, and prepare documents.

4) Strengthening Indigenous Rights in the Inter-American Human Rights System: Providing legal expertise and working with OAS agencies in the promotion of indigenous rights. Interns will assist the Center with work at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, especially with regards to thematic hearings, precautionary measures, contentious cases, and special reports on indigenous issues, and will follow-up other developments that are relevant to indigenous peoples.

5) Guatemala: Protecting the Maya Q’eqchi’ communities of El Estor, their resources, and the local environment. We are currently litigating a major case before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, in order to defend the land, natural resources, self-government and cultural rights of Maya Q’eqchi’ communities under threat from nickel mining and protected areas. Interns will assist with all aspects of the proceedings before the Commission, including legal research, drafting briefs, compiling and reviewing evidence, preparing for related hearings, translation, etc.

6) Rapa Nui: Protecting the Rapa Nui People from ongoing action of the Chilean State affecting the Nation’s collective rights and its clan members’ individual rights. The Rapa Nui Nation is the indigenous people of “Easter Island”, a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeastern most point of the Polynesian triangle. The Center represents the Rapa Nui Nation in all international proceedings before the Inter-American Human Rights System. Interns will assist with related legal research, writing and counsel.

Bryant Pond 4-H Camp and Learning Center is seeking qualified, high-energy individuals to work in our Lakeside Classroom. This position requires either a two, or six-month commitment. A six-month Field Teacher would work during the summer at Bryant Pond as a counselor in the summer camp program. In the spring and fall, a six-month Field Teacher would work in the Lakeside Classroom residential school program. This program focuses on teaching environmental education and teambuilding to students, grades four through college. The two-month Field Teacher position starts in late August or early September and continues until the school-programming season is completed near the end of October or early November.

The primary responsibility of Field Teachers is providing students with high quality programming in ecology, teambuilding, challenge course, and outdoor skills within a residential setting.

Field Teachers at Bryant Pond 4-H Center’s Lakeside Classroom typically work a five-day week starting at 7:30am on Monday through 4:30pm on Friday. On nights when participants are staying over, Field Teachers will take turns monitoring the bunkhouses until 10:00pm when school personnel return for the evening. All other field teachers are on-call after 9:30pm in the case of an emergency. Most weeks will consist of two-to-three overnight programs. Field Teachers may be asked to work occasional weekends on a rotating basis. This job demands a great deal of energy and commitment; field teachers often plan and prepare lessons outside of the regular workday.

Room and board are provided to Lakeside Classroom Field Teachers. Housing arrangements include: wall tents, rustic cabins, and rooms in the main office building. Shower facilities, bathrooms, and laundry service are available for any of the three locations. Being prepared for sleeping in cool weather is advised.

Program staff at Bryant Pond 4-H Center work and live in a very close community and are expected to contribute to the community through sharing in chores, and maintaining a commitment to a positive and collegial work environment. Those living on campus are expected to keep up with the chores associated with shared living spaces including the bathrooms, and kitchen. While programs are in session, all food will be prepared and provided by our kitchen staff. While off duty, staff members are welcome to use the kitchen facilities to prepare personal food or eat leftovers out of the staff refrigerator.

Although the main responsibility of a Field Teacher is to work directly with participants teaching lessons, work in other areas may be required. Staff may be asked to help with facility upkeep and maintenance, office work, building projects, and lesson planning. Bryant Pond 4-H Camp and Learning Center is dedicated to providing support and high quality training to its Field Teachers. Staff training is a full week, and consists of in-depth teambuilding and challenge course facilitation skills, concepts of ecology, outdoor skills such as canoeing/hiking safety/shooting sports, fire and shelter lessons, policy and procedures, and more.

Responsibilities

1.     Cooperate and coordinate with the Business Office at Manomet. Manage contracts and, especially, subcontracts to partners to track and provide follow-up with invoices, payments and deadlines; receive and acknowledge reports from partners; and review and track spending against budgets to determine totals and balances / matching funds available.

2.     Provide organization and support in planning, conducting and reporting meetings, including meetings with participants from many nations.

3.     Serve as the interface between Spanish-speaking partners and English-speaking staff at Manomet. Provide rapid “moderate quality” translation of documents, presentations, news items and similar short pieces.

4.     Assist with travel planning and reservations.

5.     Assist the directors of the Shorebird Recovery Project and of the Shorebird Science Division at Manomet with other administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications

1.     Fluency in written and spoken English and Latin American Spanish, including business and scientific vocabulary required. Competency in Portuguese and/or French a plus.

2.     Proficiency in standard computer applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Facility with Skype desirable.

3.     Professional “get-it-done” attitude, combined with flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and project coordination experience.

4.     Ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, and with a variety of external partners from individual landowners to senior government officials.

5.     Experience in multi- / bi-lingual office settings working with international partners a plus.

6.     Understanding of and commitment to Manomet’s mission highly desirable.

Organization Overview

Educating the Streets – Building Society is a social innovation project developed in partnership with Prolavie (Canada). It facilitates a work-study balance for working children, leading to an increase in their capacity and improved opportunities; while fostering engagement of the broader community across multiple sectors. We believe the greatest engine for change and social capital are Youth; and therefore a primary element of this project is the participation of youth, sharing knowledge and life experiences, as they develop long lasting relationships. Young international volunteers are welcome to participate in any of our project activities.

1. Technical Training + Marketable Activities

Working children receive training in various domains (entrepreneurial and technical), helpful to access the labor market and fulfill their interests, in partnership with private sector organizations, and as part of a common shared value creation strategy. These capabilities are applied in building and selling marketable products or services. Volunteers may help with the coordination and execution of such activities, according to the current needs and the volunteer’s interest. In addition, volunteers may conduct training workshops related to their own professional strengths, relevant to current working activities of children and if possible on skills for establishing social enterprises.

2. Education Support

Includes both support on school subjects where the children have difficulties and further information and education sessions on subjects related to the daily challenges the children are faced with.

Volunteers may become mentors of the children and help them with homework or school subjects and and may also organize and conduct specific education sessions, according to current necessities and own interests.

3. Performing Arts: Personal and Social Skills Development

We have developed a special curriculum with our theater partner Hecho a Mano called Confident, Strong and Free, and composed of several elements: body expression, vocal expression, acting, musical expression, mise en scene and creative collective techniques.
