Description

An internship with the BlueGreen Alliance can include research assistance and writing, legislative support, event planning, communications and working with U.S. and international nongovernmental organizations, as well as BGA’s union, environmental, business, and community partners and allies. Interns will also be asked to participate in administrative work as needed, but the overall nature of the internship is highly substantive, focusing on specific projects as determined by the applicant and supervisor. Internships are offered during the fall, spring and summer in the following areas:

Legislative and Policy – D.C. (32-40 hours/wk) – Assist the Legislative and Policy team with research, legislative and advocacy efforts, and material development (writing and editing fact sheets, reports, and other documents) in three focus areas:

  1. Transportation
  2. Energy & Environment
  3. Workers’ Rights and the Clean Economy

Note these are three separate internships, so please keep that in mind when indicated your interest area(s) in your application.

CA Field and Policy Program – San Francisco (24-40hrs/wk) – Support

  • the BlueGreen California field and policy program including policy
    and organizing support in a state with an ambitious clean energy agenda in a
    number of areas including energy efficiency, scaling up renewable energy and
    clean cars and fuels.

Communications – D.C. (24-40hrs/wk) – Join a dynamic and fast-paced communications team, helping to produce written materials like blog posts and press releases, developing content for our social media platforms and maintaining media lists and conducting media outreach.

Conference and Events D.C. (24-40hrs/wk) – Assist BGA’s Conference and Events Program team in all aspects of planning and preparation for the 2013 Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference as well as the 2012 Right Stuff Awards. Staff, coordinate and supervise various Working Groups – including Programming and Outreach – for the 2013 GJGJ National Conference. Help execute an outreach plan to ensure participation of labor, environmental and regional organizations; businesses and industries; and federal, state and local agencies. Manage communications and construct tracking processes for various lists, commitments and registration. Also be able to assist with research tasks when available. Qualifications

Applicants should have at least 1-2 years of college education or other relevant experience. The ideal candidate is organized and willing to learn, with prior study and/or interest in the fields of labor and economics, environment, energy and sustainability, international trade or social justice. The ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment, work independently and take initiative is necessary, as are strong research, writing and computer skills. Familiarity with office procedures, workings of Congress and conference or event planning is helpful.

Amazon Watch is seeking an entrepreneurial, savvy, hands-on manager as the Deputy Director (DD) to join us in continuing our organizational vision and growth. As Amazon Watch expands its programs, the DD will be a key contributor. Based in our San Francisco Headquarters, the DD will lead our strategic planning process and be responsible for managing and directing our development, finance, and operations departments to deliver effective support to our program and communications teams and to indigenous and local communities in the regions of the Amazon where we work.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of financial management in a non-profit context as well as knowledge of development processes and systems. The DD will have the skills to effectively partner with staff and consultants to develop budgets, conduct scenario planning, and build systems to scaffold organizational growth.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning, Budgeting & Evaluation (20%)

  • Lead annual and 5-year strategic planning processes
  • Coordinate annual evaluation processes with Program Director and Operations/ HR Manager
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting process, creating a budget development system for dissemination to program, development, finance, and operations teams; train staff on budget development & planning as needed

Qualifications

Description

The Puente Hills Landfill Preservation Authority (Habitat Authority) seeks one full-time Ecologist or Ecologist II. The Habitat Authority is a government park agency established for the purpose of acquiring, restoring and/or maintaining additional open space and native habitat in the Puente Hills area of Los Angeles County, CA. The Habitat Authority manages approximately 3,860 acres of preserved public open space.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Ecologist will perform a variety of natural resource related projects in support of the agency. This is an at-will position. Open until filled.

Responsibilities

 Ecologist I

– Periodically available to attend agency Citizen Technical Advisory Committee meetings generally held the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. Available monthly for Board meetings generally held every fourth Thursday at 3 p.m. Both meetings are located in Whittier. However, attendance meetings that vary in date and time may be necessary.

– Inspection of potential properties for acquisition.

– Supervise all revegetation activities and contracts.

– Monitor effects of recreation on managed lands.

– Analyze technical data and make appropriate recommendations.

– Prepare and manage grant applications.

– Assist with implementing purchasing policies for natural resource contracts.

– Understand and implement agency Resource Management Plan.

– Assist with education and volunteer program.

– Other related duties as may be assigned.

Ecologist II

– All of the above mentioned for Range I.

– Work with GIS consultant to create GIS maps of natural resources or other maps as needed for management.

– Conduct periodic surveys and monitoring activities for gnatcatcher on properties.

Qualifications

Ecologist I

Experience: Four years or more of experience of implementation of resource management planning and protection programs as an ecologist. (Graduate work in Ecology, natural sciences, or closely related fields may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.) Experience with restoration projects; planning, budgeting and supervising projects. Experience with CEQA and regulatory permitting requirements.

Education: Completion of bachelors degree in Ecology, Biology, Botany, Wildlife Management, or related field. A masters degree in a related field is highly desirable and preferred.

Knowledge of: Conservation Biology theory; Southern California environment and resources; local wildlife and vegetation communities; and knowledge of CEQA and regulatory permitting requirements.

Ability to: Work independently, be a self-starter and team player; excellent wildlife and/or botanical identification skills; provide creativity in the planning and implementing of programs; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; keep necessary records and write well-written reports; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; participate with public educational efforts of the agency, and good attitude to research issues in unfamiliar subject areas. Willingness to work occasional nights.

Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

Ecologist II

Experience: Five years or more of experience as an ecologist, Experience as listed for Ecologist I, plus GIS software program experience, contract management experience, and possess Federal Fish and Wildlife Permit to conduct presence/absence surveys for the coastal California gnatcatcher.

Education: Same as Ecologist I.

Knowledge of: Knowledge as listed for Ecologist I, plus knowledge of administration including contract management, policy and program development.

Ability to: Abilities as listed for Ecologist I, plus ability to prepare long range management plans; systematically monitor ecological degradation and impacts from recreational use; prepare clear, complete and technically accurate reports; effectively administer complex projects.

The Executive Director of the Massachusetts Bays Program (MBP) oversees and manages all aspects of the program’s operations including overall fiscal management, short and long range planning, and development of specific, annual work plans. 1. Provide direction and leadership to the MBP staff, Management Committee, and Technical Subcommittee in the implementation of the program, the CCMP, and its Action Plans. Provide centralized technical assistance to MBP communities, various agencies, and regional staff to support implementation of the CCMP Action Plan priorities.

2. Provide oversight and guidance for the hosting and administration of MBP. Complete the triennial review as part of EPA’s program evaluation. Coordinate with EPA-Region I staff on program initiatives.

3. Work with CZM grants and administrative staff on the management of MBP grants and contracts. Work with MBP staff to seek and apply for grant funding to support projects that carry out priority CCMP Action Plans.

4. Support the development of innovative management approaches and creative technologies and solutions on specific priority issues, including water quality, wetlands and habitat protection and restoration, invasive species management, and climate change adaptation. Work with CZM and staff at other agencies to promote efforts to support CCMP implementation.

5. Assist outreach staff in developing outreach and education initiatives for the public regarding the protection of Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays.

6. Attend national meetings organized by EPA and the Association of National Estuary Programs, and participate, as appropriate, in any additional meetings and conferences to support the missions of the program.

7. Hire and supervise core staff, as needed. Manage contracts for services and products including regional technical assistance and coordination.

8. Teamwork — Cooperate with CZM staff, management, and other agencies on joint projects, willingly accepting appropriate share of workload. Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Description:

Oregon Environmental Council’s Program Director for Environmental Health promotes policies that create toxic-free environments (especially for children and communities that suffer disproportionately from toxic pollution); conducts projects that build the case for comprehensive chemical policy reform; and strengthens collaborative relationships with health professionals. Major ongoing duties of this program director include developing and promoting environmental health policies in the Oregon Legislature and other policy venues; working to ensure effective implementation of Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s statewide Toxics Reduction Strategy; coordinating the Oregon chapter of Collaborative on Health & the Environment; and co-developing the annual Northwest Environmental Health Conference. Other projects in the coming year include working with community partners to develop an environmental health plan for Multnomah County and producing a report on chronic diseases in Oregon and the major environmental contributors to those diseases.

Responsibilities

Policy and Project Development

  • Formulates ideas for new projects; develops project implementation plans
  • Develops policy proposals
  • Produces fact sheets, reports and other communication tools to support policy proposals and project objectives
  • Investigates and analyzes issues germane to program; reviews relevant professional materials and communications on a continuing basis

Advocacy

  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with key interest groups and individuals, including policy-makers and agency staff; builds broad support for program goals and project objectives
  • Designs and implements public education and media campaigns; writes articles, alerts and opinion pieces
  • Prepares and presents public comments and testimony; lobbies Oregon Legislature

Outreach and Education

  • Designs and coordinates educational events and materials
  • Develops and implements public education and “things you can do” campaigns related to specific projects
  • Actively seeks earned media
  • Serves as an ambassador for OEC, building OEC’s public presence and securing new members

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of professional experience in public policy development and advocacy, public affairs, or other related field
