You will be joining an entrepreneurial team of dedicated staff members who seek to improve water quality for the Potomac and its tributaries by mobilizing and growing an impassioned base of river advocates to impart change at the local and state levels. As Director of Community Conservation, you will be responsible for outreach activities and events that build community amongst individuals within targeted geographies in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Specifically, you’ll lead innovative and engaging recreation and environmental stewardship opportunities. In addition, you will also be responsible for the recruitment and management of the Conservancy’s volunteers and engaging them in important local clean water policy initiatives when appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  • Help to shape the overall strategic direction of the community engagement programs;
  • Implement and assess community engagement initiatives that help folks have fun along the river and “get their hands dirty;”
  • Conduct high-level outreach and relationship building with a diverse array of volunteers;
  • Manage, train, and recruit a special contingent of volunteers to represent the Conservancy at the River Center and community events;
  • Create appropriate systems to recruit, track, retain and upgrade volunteers and other program participants in a central database;
  • Draft compelling promotional emails, social media posts, and other communications;
  • Assist in developing and writing blog posts and articles for the website and newsletter;
  • Help coordinate grassroots support for Potomac Conservancy policy campaigns;

Regional Manager, Rising Sun Energy Center – California

Description: The Regional Manager leads and manages the CYES program in 4-6 partner cities across the East Bay, Marin, and Sonoma counties. Responsibilities include program planning, program implementation, and program management. This position directly supervises a full-time Regional Outreach Manager (ROM). In addition to managing the ROM year-round, the Regional Manager also directly supervises 8-12 seasonal managers, and indirectly supervises 36-54 youth. This position is based in Berkeley; however, there is regular travel to cities in his/her region.

The Regional Manager reports to the Director of Youth Programs, is accountable for the success of the CYES program in his/her region, and with the entire CYES team, is responsible for overall success of the program. We are looking for individuals with strong experience managing people and programs, who can work both autonomously and as part of a team. Leadership, organization, and adaptability are key skills for this position.

Experience working with young adults (15-22) and a passion for the environment is strongly preferred. This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience; full benefits package offered.

Responsibilities:

Program Planning Within Your Regionl Lead and oversee the planning of and preparation for the CYES program, including but not limited to:

o Act as primary point-of-contact for partner organizations (municipalities, utilities, etc.)

o Recruit, interview, and hire 40+ local youth for the summer program

o Work with city contacts to secure site office locations for each of your CYES sites

o Recruit, interview, and hire 10+ summer managers

Work with the CYES team to plan and design seasonal manager and youth training; Oversee the outreach campaign and outreach staff to ensure programmatic goals are met; Conduct outreach as needed: phone calls, attending community events, etc., to generate client leads; Work with Operations Coordinator/CYES team to coordinate logistics, forms, inventory, supplies, etc.; Collaborate with the Director of Youth Programs, Senior Program Manager, and other Regional Managers to develop and track site and program goals, manage program budgets, and determine overall program strategy;

Program Implementation within your Region

Co-lead a 1.5 week long CYES training for summer managers; Facilitate weekly summer manager meetings; While program is in operation visit sites multiple times a week to troubleshoot, problem-solve, manage, and provide support; Provide direction on and resolve any summer staff issues; Monitor data collection and inventory tracking, performing quality control audits at site offices; Complete end-of-program invoicing and reporting for cities, utilities, and municipalities

Program Management

  • Directly manage and supervise the Regional Outreach Manager for your region, overseeing the recruitment of CYES customers and other local outreach activities
  • Directly manage and supervise summer staff
  • Responsible for the overall performance of all site offices in your region, including staff performance, meeting site installation goals, quality control and assurance, and successful outreach campaigns
  • Ensure organizational, operational, and risk management policies are followed by all summer staff
  • Ensure youth and managers have a fun and successful summer and that they are growing and learning
  • Track and maintain program goals within your region
  • Help guide the direction and improvement of the CYES program overall
  • Additional projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree or BA/BS degree with related commensurate experience
  • 2-4 years of experience in program management and youth development and/or workforce development
  • Knowledge of, or working experience, in energy efficiency/sustainability/environmental education
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage programs/projects, be able to multi-task, solve problems,

delegate tasks, and manage a large staff

  • Excellent computer skills: word processing, spreadsheet software, database management
  • Excellent written and oral communication; networking; and conflict management and resolution skills

IEC District Intern, New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission – New York

Description: The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission serves as a forum for interstate communication and coordination on water related pollution control efforts among all the New England States and New York State.

In May 2012, NEIWPCC entered into an agreement with the IEC District to assist their three compact members (NY, NJ, and CT) in meeting their most pressing water resource, quality, and wastewater treatment concerns, both within and across state boundaries. NEIWPCC is working with the IEC District in meeting their diverse needs by providing fiduciary responsibility, staff and technical assistance, analysis and support for a broad array of water resource areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff to support IEC’s inspection program related to municipal discharges, industrial discharges, pump stations, and dry-weather CSO and MS4 discharges, including:

o Assist with pre-inspection tasks, including equipment calibration and maintenance, sterilization and preparation of bottles, coolers and sampling equipment.

o Assist with inspections at wastewater treatment plants and other industrial/municipal facilities, pump stations, and ORI sites, including sampling and analysis in the field as scheduled by Senior Manager.

o Assist with sampling analysis and bench work in the laboratory as needed.

o Assist with routine laboratory quality control activities and housekeeping.

  • Assist staff to support IEC’s monitoring program related to ambient water quality, short-notice sampling, and other projects, including:

o Assist with boat-based surveys.

o Utilize portable monitoring equipment to collect field measurements.

o Assist with collecting ambient water samples and assist with data collection and recording of field measurements.

o Assist with the preservation and transport of samples, as required.

o Assist with laboratory analyses in accordance with established procedures and methods.

Qualifications: Education: Minimum of 3 years towards a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, biology, or closely related field. Ideal applicants will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and flexible with a willingness to work in laboratory and field settings.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Description: The Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO) is seeking candidates for the position of Executive Director. This is a leadership position with organizational responsibilities to advance the interests of MARCO www.midatlanticocean.org. The successful candidate will exhibit the vision, leadership, management and entrepreneurial skills required to transition MARCO to an outcome-driven organization that delivers products and services of value to the five Mid-Atlantic States — New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. The Executive Director works on behalf of the MARCO States and reports to and serves at the pleasure of the MARCO Management Board. This is a one-year contractual position with potential for renewal.

Responsibilities: MARCO is at a pivotal time as an organization. A strong, nimble and effective leader is needed to: propose and execute actions that achieve MARCO priorities; deliver outcomes and tangible results from existing grants and funding; seek new funding opportunities and strategic partnerships; and ensure deliverables are on time and of high quality.

For state policy, the intern will provide research and administrative support for the State Energy Efficiency Scorecard and the State and Local Policy Database. Specifically, this position will support data collection efforts related to utility and state government programs. The intern may also contribute to other state policy work, including research on mature utility programs, on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities:

  Collect city greenhouse gas or energy inventories, other energy performance data sets, and document the related goals set by these cities.

  Complete basic analysis of the findings from this research. Time permitting, the intern may also begin writing the performance assessment report and/or assisting in interview with city staff regarding efficiency strategies.

  Manage updates to database of state-led efficiency programs using publically available data.

  Assist with organization of utility data, including outreach to state contacts, as part of the State Scorecard.

  Contribute to research on high-performing utilities by gathering information on program offerings and achieved savings.

Qualifications:

The Soil and Water Conservation Society is seeking oral and poster presentations and symposia proposals for the 70th International Annual Conference, taking place in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Each year SWCS identifies topics or a theme for special attention at the Annual Conference. The overarching theme for the conference this year is Coming Home to Conservation: Putting Science into Practice.

The 70th Annual Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) Conference will provide a forum to celebrate past conservation accomplishments as well as share and promote science-based knowledge on critical, current issues facing soil, water, and environmental sustainability.

Accepting submissions. Submissions are being accepted for the General Conference Sessions, which include eight traditional topic areas and two special areas of focus. Oral and poster presentations submitted within these topics should cater toward the conference theme.

Alternately, there are two competitive call for symposia topic areas. Submitting to one of these symposia will also require participation in an extended Q&A or panel as part of the symposium. Due to scheduling constraints, a limited number of symposia and workshops will be accepted.

Successful applicants will become Research Associates of the Mohonk Preserve.

Awards will be announced on January 31, 2015.

Responsibilities: A written progress report must be submitted half-way through the funding period and a written final report, at the end of the funding period. The stipend will be made in three payouts:

  1. at the start of the funding period
  2. at submission of the half-way progress report
  3. at the submission and acceptance of the final report.

Any publications resulting from this project must acknowledge support by the Mohonk Preserve and the Loewy Family Foundation. Original data and copies of any publications should be submitted to the Mohonk Preserve.
