The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies are directed toward improving environmental quality and who demonstrate the potential for leadership in their field.

The Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is in its 26th year of existence. The Foundation broadly defines its interest in the environment and the means by which positive results can be achieved. The application process for the Switzer Environmental Fellowships is highly competitive. Each year, through an extensive application and interview process, at least twenty Environmental Fellowships are awarded, ten in California and ten in New England, out of an initial pool of over 300 applicants. Candidates compete separately for Fellowships in New England and California.

Fellowship applicants are evaluated based on their commitment to environmental problem-solving and their potential for creating positive environmental impact. Successful candidates are innovators, leaders, problem-solvers, and they are focused on tangible results through their efforts. Applicants are required to have strong leadership, communication and critical thinking skills, relevant work and volunteer experience and the necessary scientific or technical background for their field of study. The career and professional goals of potential Fellows are carefully evaluated. The Garrison Institute’s Climate, Mind and Behavior (CMB) Initiative is currently seeking a full-time Program Coordinator. The CMB Initiative explores the connection between social sciences research and human-based solutions to climate change. We work to translate scientific knowledge into smart, new programs that reduce our energy and carbon footprints in ways that are better aligned with existing social systems, behavioral predispositions and cognitive biases. The Initiative seeks to leverage the power of organizations, networks and social institutions operating in cities, communities, environmental organizations, real estate and building management – to facilitate pro-environmental behavior change using a middle-out social change approach. Within the Climate, Mind and Behavior Initiative there are three projects, each of which hosts an annual symposium. The first, Climate, Mind and Behavior, applies key concepts from the social sciences to people-centered climate and energy solutions. The second, Climate, Cities and Behavior (CCB), explores how city leaders – mayors, planners, sustainability directors and transportation commissioners – can use social science insights to foster pro-social and pro-environmental behavior in their cities and reduce their carbon footprint.

Similarly, the third, Climate, Buildings and Behavior (CBB), explores how building managers and occupants can use social science insights to foster prosocial and pro-environmental behavior in their buildings and reduce their carbon footprint. The Program Coordinator provides administrative and programmatic support to the Climate, Mind and Behavior (CMB) Initiative Director. This position is responsible for coordinating the CMB Symposia, drafting program communications, coordinating content for electronic newsletters and managing an online resource library. Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award (due Jan. 28, 2013)

Graduate Student Leaders Sought to Shape Science Policy

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 AIBS Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award. This award recognizes graduate students in the biological sciences who have demonstrated initiative and leadership in science policy. Recipients receive first-hand experience at the interface of science and public policy.

Winners receive:

  • A trip to Washington, DC, to participate in the Biological and Ecological Sciences Coalition Congressional Visits Day, an annual event that brings scientists to the nation’s capital to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences, with a primary focus on the National Science Foundation. The event will last for two days and will be held in late March or earlyApril 2013.
  • Domestic travel and hotel expenses will be paid for the winners.
  • Policy and communications training, and information on trends in federal science funding and the legislative process.
  • Meetings with Congressional policymakers to discuss the importance of federal investments in the biological sciences.
  • A 1-year AIBS membership, including a subscription to the journal BioScience and a copy of “Communicating Science: A Primer for Working with the Media”.
  • An award certificate and membership in the EPPLA alumni network.

The 2013 award is open to U.S. citizens enrolled in a graduate degree program in the biological sciences, science education, or a closely allied field. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to science policy and/or science education policy. Prior EPPLA winners and AIBS science policy interns/fellows are not eligible.

Description

SEIA is looking for 3 government affairs interns. The ideal candidates will be available 20-40 hours per week, demonstrate an interest in energy and environmental policy, and possess strong writing skills. Candidates should also have an understanding of the legislative process, keep up with current events, and have the ability to multitask in a fast‐paced environment. Computer literacy (online research, familiarity with Word, Excel, etc.) is expected.

Interns at SEIA will have the opportunity to be a part of a fast-paced high-energy government affairs team and to participate in federal advocacy efforts on behalf of the solar energy industry. The interns will be involved in all aspects of SEIA’s government affairs agenda, including renewable electricity standards, public lands, transmission, tax policy, and appropriations.
