Organization Overview
We all want clean air, clean water and open spaces, but it takes independent research and tough-minded advocacy to win concrete results for our environment, especially when powerful interests stand in the way of environmental progress. That’s the idea behind Environment Oregon. We focus exclusively on protecting Oregon’s air, water and open spaces. We speak out and take action at the local, state and national levels to improve the quality of our environment and our lives.
In addition to being a leading voice for Oregon’s environment in Portland and throughout the state, Environment Oregon is part of a federal of state-based environmental advocacy groups that make up Environment America. Our Washington, DC advocacy office represents the Environment America federation in federal policy matters. Spartina alterniflora is a noxious weed that has invaded the intertidal waters and salt marshes of Willapa Bay. This grass is an introduced species that can displace native mud flats and salt marshes. These mud flats and salt marshes support a rich variety of organisms including algae, eelgrass, clams, oysters, crab, fish, birds, invertebrates, and marine mammals. Spartina with its growth rate and spread can crowd out native biota, as well as alter the physical characteristics of Willapa Bay.
In response to this noxious weed infestation, the Department of Natural Resources has an ongoing program to eradicate Spartina in Willapa Bay.
Under direction of the Invasive Species Program Operations Coordinator crew members conduct field operations through an integrated pest management approach. This approach involves: operating mechanical equipment; operating chemical application equipment; removing spartina plants manually; operating specialized equipment such as a swamp buggy, ATV, and airboats to access remote sites for control work; and performing routine maintenance, upkeep, and daily cleaning of equipment.
The schedule is set by best available tides and is subject to change based on weather. Work hours are based on four 10-hour days, but days and times vary throughout the course of the season.

Organization: Sightline Institute
Job Title: Summer Research Intern
Location: Seattle, WA
Hours and Compensation: unpaid, 24 hrs/wk, 10 weeks
Benefits: bus pass
Position Dates: summer 2012
Application Deadline: May 21
Posted on: May 3
Organization Overview
Sightline equips the Northwest’s citizens and decision-makers with the policy research and practical tools they need to advance long-term solutions to our region’s most significant challenges. Our work includes in-depth research, commentary, and analysis, delivered online, by email, and in-person to Northwest policy champions.
Description
This position is unpaid. Sightline’s interns commit to working at least 24 hours per week for at least 10 weeks during the summer. Interns are provided with office workspace, including a computer and email account, along with a bus pass.
Responsibilities
Assist Sightline’s research team in compiling, analyzing, and interpreting data on traffic and transportation from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. After decades of steadily increasing car traffic, vehicle travel has stagnated—even as state and provincial governments are planning billions of dollars to rebuild and widen urban highways. Our research on traffic suggests that the region simply doesn’t need—and can’t afford—these costly highway megaprojects. We need a research intern to help compile and analyze traffic trends, demographic data, state budget reports, and other sources of information that help us tell the story about the changing demand for car travel, and our declining ability to pay for more and bigger roads
Qualifications
Sightline seeks a motivated, organized, and self-starting data geek for a summer internship. You must be able to demonstrate strong academic credentials, meticulous attention to detail, excellent data analysis skills, experience with spreadsheet software, a passion for simplifying complex data into a clear and understandable story, and a commitment to a sustainable Northwest.
How to Apply:
lease email a cover letter, resume, and at least one example of analytical work to [email protected] by May 21. Sightline Institute encourages candidates from all socioeconomic, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds to apply.

Application Deadline: June 15

Our roots at the state level give Environment America a unique “outside the beltway” perspective on the issues, while our state staff, national field organizers and members across all 50 states provide the grassroots power necessary to enact change at the federal level.

Environment Oregon is seeking an experienced advocate to work on preservation campaigns. The Preservation Advocate is responsible for managing priority campaigns for greater expansion of wilderness areas in Oregon, protecting Oregon’s rivers and cleaning up Oregon’s beaches and coast. Organization: The New York Academy of Sciences
Job Title: STEM Mentor/ Teaching Fellow
Location: New York, NY
Hours and Compensation: unpaid, T/TH 4-6 pm
Position Dates: Fall 2012
Application Deadline: June 1
Posted on: May 2
Organization Overview
Begun in Fall 2010, the New York Academy of Sciences Afterschool STEM Mentoring program recruits grad students and post docs from New York City-area universities to volunteer to teach one afternoon a week in underserved 4th through 8th grade afterschool classrooms at organizations like the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Clubs. Mentors can choose to teach biology, space science, earth science, robotics, or math and can receive an Academy Education Fellow Teaching Credential for completing 24 hours of teaching and training.
Description
The Academy has partnered with two organizations that run networks of afterschool programs. In NYC, we partner with the Department of Youth and Community Development, a city agency that funds a wide development of neighborhood enrichment programs. In Newark, we partner with Citizen Schools, a national nonprofit that recruits volunteers to teach in their afterschool programs.
Graduate students and postdocs apply to be an Academy Education Fellows and if accepted are assigned to teach in the Spring or Fall. Once accepted and assigned, Fellows receive one day of training to learn how to teach a set of lessons in their chosen content area and a separate day of training on youth development and pedagogy. Mentors are welcome to work with Academy staff to adapt their lessons to their own interests and resources.
Once a Fellow has completed the two days of training, they are assigned to a site, a co-teacher and if possible, another Fellow to teach with. We try to match mentors to sites within 30 minutes of their homes or labs. In New York City, mentors typically teach 90 minutes a week and can set their schedule with their assigned program. The fall schedule in New York City runs from the first week of October through late December. In Newark, Fellows can teach Tuesday or Thursday from 4–6 p.m. at one of three Newark Elementary Schools and in the fall teach from October through December.
We focus on supporting fellows through curriculum and pedagogy training, an online network of peers and supporters, and social events to check in with your peers. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you will be matched up with an afterschool site and instructor who will be there to support you at the site and help you work with the students.
Fellows who complete 24 hours of teaching and training (over the course of two semesters in any time period) will receive a New York Academy of Sciences Education Fellow Teaching Credential.
Responsibilities
- Fellows will teach on Tuesday or Thursday from 4–6 p.m. from early February through May in Newark OR 90 minutes per week during the afterschool hours (4–6 p.m.) in New York City.
- Fellows must submit a letter of acknowledgement from their supervising scientist stating that they are aware of the once-a-week commitment to the volunteer teaching program and that they support the fellow’s commitment to this program from October through December. Letters should be emailed to [email protected] with the subject line “Fellowship Letter of Support” in conjunction with the submission of the fellow’s online application. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about this requirement.
- Fellow must complete two trainings: one to learn the science or math module, and the other is an orientation to Citizen Schools or Youth Development and Pedagogy.
- All volunteers must complete a background check through Citizen Schools or through the Department of Health at no cost to the Fellow.
Qualifications
- A grad student or post doc in a STEM field.
- Interested in volunteering in their community and gaining teaching experience.
- Driven to inspire 4th through 8th graders to love science.
