The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a not-for-profit environmental research organization that uses the power of information to improve public health and protect the environment by reducing pollution in air, water and food.

Based in Washington, D.C., and with an office in Oakland, California, EWG conducts groundbreaking, computer-assisted research on a variety of environmental issues. Recent

Description: 

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), an environmental research and advocacy organization with offices in Washington, DC; Ames, IA; and Oakland, CA, seeks a one-year position senior lobbyist to support EWG advocacy.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Coordinate efforts to reform federal food, energy, agriculture, and environmental policies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with nongovernmental organizationsadvocating for reform of federal food, energy, agriculture, and environmental policies,
  • Advocate for reforms of federal food, energy, agriculture, and environmental policies and programs.
  • Develop and disseminate materials in support of reforms
  • Represent EWG in coalitions and collaborations with other organizations and interests pursuing objectives that complement EWG’s objectives.

Qualifications:

 

  • A strong commitment to advocacy to improve the environment, conserve natural resources, and protect human health is essential.
  • Experience influencing the development and implementation of legislative and administrative policy is essential.
  • Substantial familiarity with federal food, energy, agriculture, and environmental policies is a plus.
  • Experience working with and ongoing relationships with nongovernmental organizations, interest groups, and legislative and executive branch staff major plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with EWG research, communications, and government affairs staff in a fast-paced organization with a prominent profile infood, energy, agricultural and environmental policy.
  • Excellent communications skills, including experience with print, broadcast, and new media, and strong written and interpersonal skills.

Description:

Dire ecological news and the failures of the global economy are fuelling interest in a “new economics” grounded in principles of ecological sustainability, the democratization of wealth, community empowerment and social and digital connection. Following the success of last year’s first annual Boston College Summer Institute in New Economics, we will be holding another session from August 12-18, 2013.

We will bring together a group of distinguished faculty who are pursuing research and practice in this emerging field. Faculty include Juliet Schor (Boston College), Gar Alperovitz (University of Maryland), Joel Rogers (University of Wisconsin), Michel Bauwens (P2P Foundation and University of Amsterdam), and Gill Seyfang (University of East Anglia). Practitioners working on new economy projects will join us for workshops. Together with a dynamic group of students, we will meet for an intensive program of classes, workshops, and participatory sessions. Grdauate students attending the Institute can expect to leave with a solid grounding in the latest research and theory, and as part of a network of faculty and other graduate students.

This year’s institute will be held at the Johnson Foundation’s Wingspread Retreat Center, a historic Frank Lloyd Wright designed home at Wind Point, Wisconsin. Wingspread is an exceptional facility at the shores of Lake Michigan that fosters productive conversations, creativity, and community. It is located on 32 acres of land and is ideal for hiking, biking, and swimming. Wingspread offers superb dining and accommodations.
