Position Purpose

Responsibilities

•·         Accurate, timely, permit applications that are strategically crafted for maximum flexibility, and expert negotiations with regulatory agencies that streamline the permitting process

•·         Be knowledgeable of and stay current with rules and regulations surrounding permits relating to EPA guidelines such as New Source Review Authorization, Title V Operating permit program, etc.

Overall Function

The Colorado River Director leads EDF’s sophisticated multi-disciplinary Colorado River team and campaign as it develops, advocates for, and implements solutions to the water shortage and ecosystem damage challenges society faces on the Colorado River. The Director plays a central role in our work to create a more flexible and dynamic management system for the Colorado River that meets both human and ecological needs, including healthy flows, net agricultural productivity as tied to food security, and urban economic vitality. S/he must do so with full knowledge of stresses placed on the river by climate change, development pressure, and an obsolete river management system.

Key Responsibilities

S/he will develop and embrace a sophisticated societal change vision for how to implement a Colorado River campaign and closely coordinate with other groups, partners, consultants and funders. S/he will lead the strategic planning for the project in collaboration with key EDF staff and allies. S/he will establish and maintain close collaboration with EDF’s key government, industry and NGO partners to achieve the goals and objectives in the Colorado River Project. S/he is responsible for effectively communicating about EDF’s Colorado River Project with a diverse set of partners, decision-makers, industry professionals and funders and includes frequent public speaking, interacting with media professionals, communicating through social media tools and through other written media. S/he must develop and use deep knowledge and expertise on the legal, diplomatic, policy, institutional, economic, cultural and scientific issues in the Colorado River Basin and water resource issues.

The Director also:

Supervises, manages and creatively motivates legal, policy, economics, science, communication, and administrative staff and consultants to achieve program goals

Raises, directs, manages and has direct responsibility for multi-million, multi-year budget, including planning the budget, working with development staff to prepare proposal budgets, and expenditure.

Oversees a federal and state legislative and policy campaign, including personally acting as a member of the policy team and representing EDF and coalition partners before legislators and high-level appointed agency officials.

Initiates and negotiates collaboration, partnership, and other agreements with economic interests.

Develops and implements cross-program partnerships and joint programs with other EDF programs.

Provides regular and direct briefings to EDF executive staff, trustees, and funders on program progress and strategic direction.

Negotiates, initiates, implements, and oversees partnerships to realize large-scale ecosystem restoration.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned conservation professional with 12 to 15 years of experience working in a position of significant responsibility with experience building and running a successful advocacy campaign. The ideal candidate must possess outstanding strategic thinking, planning and communication skills and be an innovative thought and action leader who demonstrates collaborative teamwork, flexibility, adaptability and creativity as well as program management skills that yield successful outcomes. The ideal candidate will have strong negotiation and deal-making skills, a strong focus on – and track record with – pragmatic, market-based solutions to conservation problems as well as demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing effective strategies to achieve desired outcomes.

The ideal candidate has a understanding of legal, policy and operational frameworks dictating current western river management and/or understanding of market-based tools and policy solutions for modernizing river management. The ideal candidate for this position will possess a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. Graduate-level training and degrees are highly desirable.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience with and an ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and build relationships with diverse partners and decision makers. Experience with high-level conservation contacts (partners, community, government, etc.) and fundraising is required. The ideal candidate will work with EDF staff and our allies to identify the largest solvable problems and propose solutions to address them. S/he will build durable relationships with key stakeholders in the Colorado River Basin and across the country, working closely with staff and allies on the Colorado River Project.

This individual will possess excellent management experience, including the ability to build a team and inspire and motivate team members, set goals, and lead efforts to achieve and sustain excellence. They will also have successful experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects. YMCA Camp Orkila is situated on the north side of Orcas Island – part of the San Juan Islands in the Salish Sea – and is accessible by ferry from Anacortes, 75 miles north of Seattle. Orkila offers over 285 acres of forest, grassland, marine and fresh water ecosystems as well as a small salmon hatchery, a marine education center, many challenge course elements (including our new 1000 foot zip-line) and a working organic garden.

Our instructors work 5 days a week split between our Outdoor Environmental Education Program and our weekend camping and retreat programs hosting parent/child groups. As an instructor at Camp Orkila, your responsibilities will include teaching courses in forest and marine ecology and other earth sciences, facilitating our high- and low-ropes challenge courses and leading team-building initiatives for visiting 5th-8th grade students. Instructors can also expect to spend some evenings during the week facilitating evening programs. In addition to these duties, staff also work together to assist with many other camp operations, including cleaning, kitchen work, and maintenance projects.

Requirements: We are looking for people who have at least one season of experience teaching environmental education a BS/BA in environmental science education, recreation, or related field or equivalent experience. All of our staff must be first aid and CPR certified by their first day of employment. Applicants should enjoy and have experience working with children. Our ideal candidates are team players, have a sense of humor, the ability to think creatively, and possess a strong work ethic.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES – To ensure that the accounting system is in place to record transactions in accordance with accepted accounting principles and IUCN policy such that it provides the basis for an efficient Financial management and information system – To direct and control the administration of all financial, treasury and accounting activities in accordance with IUCN policy and in compliance with fiscal, legal and statutory requirements of the host country – To provide country office management with guidance on financial management by assisting in the planning and budgeting for the country financial operations and providing the analysis and interpretation of the results for sound management decision and action – To provide projects undertaken in the country the appropriate financial support for the efficient and effective project implementation – To co-ordinate and provide the required financial information and requirements for IUCN Asia Regional Office (ARO) and IUCN HQ

DUTIES:
1. Accounting and Reporting
– Supervise the recording, classifying and summarizing of the financial transactions of the IUCN LAOS and ensuring the proper update and maintenance of the accounts to ensure that the SUN accounting system provides the basis for an efficient financial information system for both internal and external users and that it is compliant with internationally accepted accounting principles, legal and statutory requirements of IUCN policy
– Review all accounting related transactions (payment vouchers, receipt vouchers, debit and credit notes, staff time invoices, correcting journal entries) prior to entry into the accounting system.
– Ensure that all balance sheet accounts are reconciled in accordance with IUCN accounting policy and procedures
– Analyze and interpret the IUCN LAOS financial statements and project financial reports and recommend courses of action to improve efficiency and economy
– Review and provide guidance and coaching to accounting staff ensuring accuracy, correctness and completeness of transactions recorded.
– Ensure the timeliness of required financial reports to project managers, donors, IUCN LAOS management, IUCN regional office, and IUCN headquarters
– Review and ensure that debit and credit notes are properly invoiced and that the current accounts are regularly reconciled in accordance with IUCN policies
– Prepare periodic report of sub cost centres and review their financial performance and give suggestions as required.
– Prepare monthly MIS and financial sustainability report for the Country Office, reviewing these reports with the Country Manager and programme staff, and submitting to ARO in accordance with the monthly timetable
– Assist implementing partners’ organizations in setting up appropriate financial systems and procedures to ensure compliance with donors funding requirements.

2. Treasury and Cash Management
– Prepares the country offices cash flow projections and monitors the continued availability of funds to cover the requirements of country office operations and its component projects and programmes
– Formulate and implement an approved plan to maximize the yield on idle or unspent funds of country office
– Review and ensure that disbursements are properly supported with relevant evidential documentation and that they are properly identified into its cost center or project codes
– Cash and bank balances are reconciled with the records maintained
– Obtain approval of the Director Finance prior to receiving funds transferred in currencies other than the ledger currency or the local currency
– Obtain approval of the Director Finance before converting any holdings of non ledger currency to t6he ledger currency. This requirement doesn’t apply to necessary conversions from the ledger currency to the local currency.

3. Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting
– Assist in the planning and budgeting for the IUCN LAOS Country Office and its projects and programmes, taking the lead in the financial plans and budgets and ensuring that the assumptions, parameters, guidelines and policies in planning are complied with.
– Review and monitors budget performance of the country operations and individual projects and programmes and make recommendations to improve performance
– Provide cost data of the various resource inputs to programme personnel to prepare and update Budgets
– Assist in ABC list planning preparation and monitoring process as a tool for ensuring sustainability.
– Assist the Country Manager and the Programme Coordinators in the preparation and review of any proposed agreements/contracts with external parties, including implementation agreements with partner’s organization, small grants recipients, external donors and constancy contracts.
– Assist the Country Manager and programme staff by providing guidance on compliance with donors guidelines and the provision of donor agreement
– Assist programme staff in the preparation of annual project budgets and work plans, and the regular monitoring of actual expenditure against budget
– Monitor the exchange rates and assist programme staff in preparing updated annual / total project budgets to adjust for the exchange impacts or changed spending against budget.

4. Internal Control Environment
– Continuously review the adequacy of internal control to ensure the provision of accurate and timely financial information, protection of assets and adherence to policies, systems and procedures and the smooth and orderly implementation of plans and activities.
– Ensure the Internal Control Systems (ICS) are in place and are monitored in accordance with IUCN accounting policies and procedures

5. Fixed Asset Management
– Ensure the identification and proper inventory of fixed assets of the country office through the conduct of an annual inventory to determine their location and condition of proper disposition.
– Determine accuracy of depreciation in accordance with IUCN policy and that the assets are adequately protected
– Liaison with the Administration Unit to ensure the schedule of assets / project equipments are distributed to budget holders at least twice per year to assist in verification of existence and condition.
– Prepare the request for approval to dispose of missing, lost, stolen, damaged and obsolete equipments

6. Payroll
– Ensure that the systems and procedures are in place to enable accurate preparation and disbursement of the payroll in compliance with statutory requirements
– Sign off on the monthly payroll by reviewing and checking the accuracy of amounts to be paid to the staff

7. Due Diligence and Audit
– Coordinate due diligence processes on potential IUCN LAOS grantees.
– Prepare an audit plan for the year, and prepare the appropriate plans for each individual audit, including a file for all documents required for the audit. Obtain approvals for each audit in accordance with the Delegation of Authority
– Co-ordinates with the auditors in the external and internal audit of the country office and its component programmes and projects. This include preparation of draft financial statements and necessary notes to the accounts.
– Provide draft responses to the audit management letter, including coordinating inputs from the programme, human resources, administration and other units as necessary, and forward tom the Director Finance for review
– Conduct financial reviews of IUCN’s sub-recipients and partner organization’s financial records, systems, and internal controls, targeting early identification and correction of any deficiencies found as part of IUCN’s risk management strategy.
– Ensure the closure and resolution of audit findings

8. General
– Provide leadership and guidance in all matters pertaining to finance (including taxation and other financial issues) and give advice and support to all those needing it
– Identify and support IUCN’s efforts to integrate gender and social equity into its projects and programes and as institutions
– Provide training to IUCN staff and to staff of implementing partners on IUCN financial policies and procedures, budgeting methods and compliance with donor guidelines
– Prepare and maintain a local setting out instructions, format and instructions on all local financial policies and procedures, budget preparation, reporting formats and the like.
– Where required, assist with writing and maintaining the local procurement policy and be a member of the procurement committee.

9. Carry out any other relevant tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

REQUIREMENTS

• Higher Education or Post Graduate qualification in an Accounting or Finance discipline

• At least 5 – 6 years of relevant professional experience in project finance and accounting, especially on projects funded by EU

• Proven ability to conceptualize, plan, budget and implement programme finance related issues

• Relevant experience in working with international organizations will be considered an asset.

• A high level of computer literacy is essential

• Ability to work under pressure at times, while maintaining high quality results is an essential requirement.

Position Purpose:

Annually over 800 people volunteer to assist with Cascade events and programs. The Volunteer Coordinator helps fill Cascade’s volunteer needs, acts as the main point of contact for volunteers, and leads appreciation events to thank all of the fantastic volunteers.

The Volunteer Coordinator is a member of the Membership and Outreach team but will work closely with the Events team and other staff members as needs arise.

Key Responsibilities:

The volunteer coordinator is responsible for managing the volunteer program including volunteer recruitment, conducting volunteer orientations, placing volunteers in appropriate positions, maintaining a volunteer database, and training and supporting staff members who coordinate volunteers.

Cascade has a number of large events throughout the year that requires coordination of hundreds of volunteers. Community Development: Knowledge of community development and anti-poverty strategies with an understanding of equitable and sustainable communities, and economic security issues confronting low-income people. Background in workforce development, affordable housing, foreclosure policy and prevention; asset building and wealth creation in low-income communities and/or experience in community economic development and finance are desired.

Community Health: Understanding of epidemiology, quantitative methods, health policy, management and evaluation are desired. Some background or work experience in the health care delivery system or a public or state health department is a plus. Must have an understanding of health disparities, cultural competency and community based work with vulnerable populations.

Education: Deep knowledge in the areas of Full Service Community Schools, Early Childhood Education or Education Equity/Education for Social Justice, with an understanding of the historical impact of structural racism, bias, and discrimination in public education.   2. Coordinate program components to promote all four CHP strategies in partnership with GrowNYC and other stakeholders, including city agencies and elected officials. Facilitate meetings and conference calls and any other means necessary to sustain these productive ongoing collaborations.
  3. Manage day-to-day operations of the two CHP program recreation strategies, including oversight of consultants assigned to work on these strategies.
  4. Build broad-based support for the project among partners, stakeholders and community residents.

  • Provide health and safety and public outreach training to survey crews as needed.

Required Qualifications

We are looking for individuals who possess a BS/BA degree in an environmental field of study with at least 5 years of field related experience and a working knowledge of environmental survey protocols. The successful candidate should have experience conducting or coordinating biological field surveys. Optimally, the candidate should also have a basic understanding of environmental permitting and a familiarity with linear projects. Candidates should demonstrate leadership potential and possess strong interpersonal skills; an excellent oral and written communication style; and proven ability to multi-task under tight schedule constraints. Drug testing will be required.

The Association is a nonprofit conservation group (www.neponset.org) working to protect and restore the Neponset River, its tributaries and surrounding watershed lands south and west of Boston. The Association pursues its goals through advocacy, education, monitoring, and hands on restoration projects.

Position Description

The Environmental Scientist/Engineer is a key member of the Association’s senior staff. She/he helps to formulate strategy and implement programs to restore the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the watershed. She/he provides scientific and/or engineering expertise to complement the legal, policy, political and education expertise of other staff members.

The Environmental Scientist/Engineer’s role involves elements of water chemistry, ecology, biology, civil engineering, landscape architecture, hydrology, geomorphology, and watershed modeling among other disciplines. In addition, he/she helps to build partnerships with a wide array of individuals in municipal, state and federal governments, as well with as academic institutions, the private consulting community, and among watershed residents. The Environmental Scientist regularly oversees the work of interns, volunteers, and part-time staff.

The Environmental Scientist/Engineer’s work evolves over time in response to changing opportunities, however his/her current projects include:

  • Managing the Association’s volunteer-based water quality monitoring program.
  • Working with municipalities and landowners to locate, prioritize and prepare conceptual designs for measures to reduce stormwater pollution.
  • Working with municipalities and state/federal agencies to help locate and eliminate illicit connections to storm drains through field sampling, sample analysis and technical assistance.
  • Working with landowners and local authorities to help plan, permit and implement habitat restoration projects such as small dam removals.
  • Working with municipalities to help evaluate the impact of water withdrawals on stream health and develop strategies to reduce those impacts.

This position requires occasional early morning or weekend sampling, and occasional participation in evening meetings or weekend events.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a combination of technical and leadership skills. A bachelor’s degree in aquatic biology, ecology, hydrology, engineering, landscape architecture or a related field, plus three years of relevant work experience, is required. A master’s degree and/or additional work experience is preferred. It is unlikely that any one candidate will have formal training in all the disciplines that are touched by this position, but they must have a strong foundation in at least one area, and should be a lifelong learner who enjoys stepping outside his or her established areas of expertise.

She/he should be enthusiastic about the mission of the organization, and excited about the technical, social and political challenges involved in restoring an urban river. He/she must be self-motivated and must have excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills. He/she must be able to enunciate the policy and regulatory implications of watershed data, and have an ability to connect effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. He/she should be a capable project manager, who works well in a fast-paced team environment. She/he should be comfortable working independently in the field on uneven terrain, in a canoe and wading.

The candidate should have experience with water quality monitoring, field sampling, basic laboratory analysis, database management and GIS. Experience with stormwater best management practices, low impact development, state and federal regulatory programs, physical habitat restoration methods, streamflow monitoring, watershed modeling, grant management, and working with volunteers are also valuable.

Responsibilities:

  • Help the directors launch the campaign and build a team of staff this spring
  • Build membership and raise money for environmental and social justice groups
  • Educate and engage citizens on pressing issues
  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of staff in the office and in the field
  • Meet with the directors each week to evaluate progress and provide input on hiring decisions, goals, and priorities

MA Watershed Coalition (MWC) seeks manager to build network of people who can help communities prevent and reduce polluted runoff.  Manager will work with MWC Executive Director to deliver storm water guidance and assistance for target audiences including:

–        lakes & ponds associations

–        watershed organizations

Internship Description

We are looking for motivated seasonal interns with a passion for urban farming and food systems, community building, efficiency, and sustainability and a willingness to do hard work in all kinds of weather. Sustained energy and a love of physical labor are essential to the farm’s success. We look for applicants eager to learn about soil, plants and their production, as well as the programmatic and administrative aspects of farming. This internship is an opportunity for hands-on learning, where a commitment to self-education is key.

Farm Interns will work with the Operations Coordinator on activities that include, but are not limited to:

Seed or transplant and cultivate vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other crops using organic practices
Harvest, clean, divide and distribute produce to shareholders
Work on improving weed management and pest control
Supervise youth, adult, and community workgroups and volunteers
Provide educational tours
Lead and supervise work days for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program at DeLaney
Maintain shareholder work log and contact book, track hours, update shareholders
Manage portions of a weekly newsletter, including researching seasonal recipes, taking photographs, and gathering quotes and stories from community members and staff
Construct, maintain and repair irrigation systems
Work on improving weed and pest control
Operate farm stand onsite and farmers’ markets offsite
Competently perform farm and farm program operations by the end of the season

Skills Needed:

Ability to do outdoor, repetitive, sometimes tedious, physically demanding work
Knowledge of organic farming a plus, but not required with a good attitude and strong work ethic
Willingness to collaborate with DUG staff, farm staff, other interns, shareholders and community groups
High comfort level in diverse settings and diverse communities
Well-organized, self-motivated, creative, attention-to-detail, flexible, communicative and a high awareness of personal and farm safety
High level of comfort with public speaking
Photography skills a plus
