Dates and compensation: An Intern is needed for 10-15 hours per week to work 5-hour shifts. Interns are expected to contribute at least 2 shifts per week. Description: Our growing CYES program demands an attentive staff to manage its administrative and outreach affairs. By assisting, you both have an opportunity to learn by watching senior program managers operate, and also be responsible for smaller projects within the CYES program. Our interns are an integral part of our success. You will not be “on the sidelines” watching the action; you will be right in the middle of it providing invaluable assistance. Responsibilities:

The Conservation Program Intern works closely with management staff and also works independently to coordinate and carry out campaign efforts within CYES. In the interview and hiring process, intern needs and strengths will be assessed and considered in building their duties and responsibilities. Intern projects and responsibilities may include:

  • Research:Gather information about community events for outreach, organizations through whom we can promote our program, and demographics of the communities we serve.
  • Direct outreach:Promote our energy- and water-savings service to residents by attending community events, canvassing door-to-door, etc.
  • Media outreach:Get the word out about our services to the community through social media, PSAs, press releases, etc.
  • Graphic design:Help create fliers and other collateral to promote the CYES program to the communities we serve.
  • Phone banking:Follow up with residents on our waitlist to schedule them for their no-cost Green House Call. Phone banking is most successful in the evening and can happen from home or the office.
  • Administrative Assistance:It takes a great deal of organization and planning to keep all the moving parts of CYES running smoothly. The Conservation Program Intern may deliver support to maintain spreadsheets, enter data, file paperwork, run errands, and handle other administrative duties.

Description: The FoEI Communications Coordinator (CC) is based in FoEI’s International Secretariat (IS) in Amsterdam and reports to FoEI’s International Coordinator. The CC develops and implements FoEI’s communications strategies and helps ensure the integration of communications planning into FoEI’s international programs and activities. FoEI’s overall communications work serves several objectives, including reaching targeted audiences and influencing public opinion, but also contributing to movement building and strengthening FoEI’s alliances.

The CC is part of the IS management team and leads a team of three communications professionals. The CC also works with communicators based in FoEI member groups around the world and with the staff of Radio Mundo Real/Real World Radio, FoEI’s multilingual web-based radio station (based in Uruguay). The CC also works in close co-operation with FoEI’s International Program Coordinators (based in member groups around the world) and Executive Committee.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of annual and long-term communications strategies for FoEI programs and activities;
  • Lead the communications team at the IS and serve as part of the International Secretariat’s Management Team;
  • Ensure that FoEI and FoEI international programs have communications strategies and a communications perspective incorporated in their work;
  • Track and report on annual and long-term communications goals;
  • Help facilitate member groups’ participation in FoEI’s communications;
  • Ensure production of FoEI materials, including program publications and an annual report;
  • Work with the staff of Radio Mundo Real/Real World Radio to develop annual and long-term strategies for the radio within the federation and with target audiences;
  • Plan and oversee annual communications budgets;
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts for communications and reporting to funding agencies and ensure that fundraising is integrated into communications strategies.

Qualifications:

  • At least five years experience as a senior level communicator in a multicultural, collaborative and international environment, with a proven track record in setting up and implementing communications strategies for network organisations;
  • Demonstrated track record working with a variety of traditional and new/digital communications tools (press/media, publications, radio, social media, alternative media, etc.) to deliver integrated communications and reach target audiences;
  • Relationship builder with flexibility, strong interpersonal, inter-cultural and organisational skills;
  • Experience with managing a team and with project and budget management;
  • Ability to work in collaborative decision-making processes in a global, decentralised environment and an ability to manage a variety of key initiatives concurrently;
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills; fluency in Spanish would be an advantage;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines and prioritize a demanding workload appropriately;
  • Willingness and ability to travel (overseas) approximately one or two times per year;

Description: The Science and Democracy Research Intern will carry out research on a variety of topics for CSD. Focusing on how science is used in policy making, the intern will help develop analyses and reports that advance the role of science in the democratic process. Research topics include scientific integrity at federal agencies, endangered species policy and legislative attacks on science. Tasks may include internet research, quantitative analysis of data in spreadsheets, and qualitative research such as interviews and event attendance.

The broad scope of the Center for Science and Democracy will enable the intern to learn about a wide range of topics within science policy. The intern will gain substantial knowledge of the policy making process, the role that science plays in the process and barriers that inhibit evidence-based policy making. In addition to an in-depth understanding of their specific research focus, the intern will gain general research and communication skills by working closely with their mentor and the CSD Team, which includes scientists, legislative experts, and outreach specialists. Specific skills the intern will gain include policy analysis tools and strategies, oral and written communication, and organizational and time management. Finally, the intern will gain an understanding of the structure and function of a science-based nonprofit and the role of research and analysis in this setting.

This is a paid, full-time summer internship.

Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for assisting in research tasks including scoping, writing, analyzing, and developing public-facing materials based on their research. Most tasks will be computer-focused; however, the intern will participate in frequent group meetings, be part of idea-brainstorming sessions, and will have opportunities to present and discuss their research with the CSD team and other UCS staff. The intern will report regularly to their mentor and be expected to produce concrete products from their assigned tasks.

Qualifications: Candidates should be able to demonstrate strong research skills. An understanding of environmental policy is desirable, though not required. Robust written and oral communications abilities, considerable self-motivation, and solid organizational skills are necessary for this position. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively both through written and oral capacities. Candidate should have the ability to work independently, a strong attention to detail, and interest in exploring diverse topics in the science policy realm. Most of all, candidate should possess a passion for improving the way in which science informs policy making, and an interest in working in the public interest/non-profit sector.

Description: Energy Foundation’s efforts to ensure a clean energy future in the United States emphasize development of policies that create big markets for energy efficiency, renewable energy and clean distributed resources. Policies advanced by the Energy Foundation’s grantees have contributed to a quadrupling of wind capacity, a 16-fold increase in solar capacity, since 2008 and robust deployment of energy efficient products.

The Program Associate’s (PA) primary responsibility will be to support the work of the California Program Director (PD). Since 2006, California has continued to steadily implement a set of actions that are driving down GHG emissions, cleaning the air, diversifying the energy and fuels that power California, and spurring innovation in a range of advanced technologies. The Energy Foundation is supporting many California non-profit organizations in the pursuit of education and outreach initiatives that will continue to improve California’s leadership on climate change issues. The (PA) will manage and assist with PD calendaring, assist with tracking program budget, reviewing grant proposals, writing reports, monitoring the grant cycle, communicate with grantees, assist the PD in the tracking of grantee activities, and facilitate correspondence with funders on a variety of needs and issues. While the PA typically works within one program sector, collaboration and coordination across sectors is expected.

As the Program Associate matures in the role and gains proficiency in EF’s unique grantmaking style and the more sophisticated job responsibilities of the position, she or he may be promoted to Senior Program Associate.

Responsibilities:

Processing & Tracking Grants:

  • Review grant proposals and ensure content is appropriate and all necessary documents are included;
  • Write briefs of grant proposals in the EF style of writing and submit for approval;
  • Process incoming grants by entering all required information into the grants management software;
  • Enter and track incoming grant proposals and grant reports into the grants management software;
  • Monitor spending and deadlines for Foundation Initiated Projects (FIPs);
  • Monitor budget targets, reconcile program budgets with accounting team and keep PO/PM/PD informed of budget status;
  • Write evaluation report of closed grants and compile and submit final grant reports and evaluations for approval;
  • Create consulting contracts as requested, enter into software for approval;
  • Coordinate joint grants, shared consulting contracts and other contracts as needed

Interacting with Grantees

  • Assign work to consultants, follow up on the work through regular contact;
  • Collaborate with grantees and consultants on proposal revisions, as needed;
  • Coordinate and assist grantees with EF’s grant making process by requesting additional information when needed, respond to questions, notifying them of the status of their grant, etc.;
  • Represent EF by participating in meetings with grantees and consultants as requested;

Administrative Duties

  • Organize program conferences and meetings;
  • Schedule calls and meetings and manage PO/PM/PD calendar as requested;
  • Keep track of upcoming deadlines, outstanding request and remind PO/PM/PD of priorities;

External Communication

  • Draft or edit reports and proposals for funders, including the core funder report;
  • Write board docket reports and prepare program docket tables;
  • Draft news updates for partners and board, as requested;
  • Coordinate with the Climate Works Foundation’s network partners and prepare materials for the annual strategy meeting;
  • Proofread and suggest edits to written materials generated by peers, as requested;

Strategy & Research

  • Stay current on latest sector news and information through contact with grantees, other experts and by reading reports, press releases, articles, etc.;
  • Research specific topics and prepare reports and visual aids, as requested;
  • Present sector updates during program and staff meetings;

Build the Energy Foundation Team

  • Generate and implement ideas for program and office improvement;
  • Maintain a good sense of humor and positive attitude;

Conservation Outreach Associate, American Rivers – Washington State

Responsibilities: Aim. Responsibilities:

Half of the intern’s time will be focused on promotion of Powers’ most recent book New Slow City: Living Simply in the World’s Fastest City – NSC. This will include specific tasks on media outreach and the organization of speaking engagements that require creativity, resourcefulness and attention to detail:

  • Media review and follow-up. Detailed media review of what was done around the launch of the book NSC under previous intern in November 2014, and creative responding and follow-up where needed to journalists and blog-writers. This will include a full review of emails, media lists, an analysis of responses and efficient follow-up and ongoing communication as needed.
  • Website and FB/social media activity and presence. Action and new content on author website, including creation of blogs, posting new articles, ensuring all media and speaking engagement information is updated. Research new articles, images to post, and ensure general activity.

Outreach, confirmation and organization of speaking engagements for NSC, in conjunction with NSC publisher New World Library, for the six-week period from early September through mid-October 2015. The other half of the Intern’s time will focus on support to and further development of the project of the “Living Well Collaborative,” currently based in Bolivia and hosted by the World Policy Institute. These tasks will include:

  • Initiate background research for proposed WPI Bolivia tour April 2016. Also, facilitate outreach on trip proposal to WPI Executive Director and Board. Set up information session at WPI for September and October 2015 trip.
  • Support transcriptions of new writing associated with “Living Well Collaborative”.
  • Assist with writing and editing of new book associated with “Living Well Collaborative”. This would be based on experience and level of interest.

— 3‑5 years of non-profit managerial (or comparable managerial) experience that includes substantial experience in development, financial management, planning and managing grassroots conservation campaigns, outreach to elected officials and state agencies, media relations, and working with volunteers.

— Proven leadership and organizational abilities and capable of encouraging and developing the capabilities of staff and of providing guidance to a volunteer board.

Responsibilities: The Clean Air & Energy Program Associate is a full-time salaried exempt position that reports to the Program Director. The Associate director participates in the advocacy efforts around the inter-related issues of climate change, air emissions/air quality, and energy policy. This includes, but is not limited to, lobbying on and engaging the public in our efforts to protect existing and promote new policies that improve air quality. The Associate will also take a lead role in grass-roots organizing and mobilization what we consider the most pressing issue of our time; climate change.

The Clean Air & Energy Program Associate should have a broad knowledge of environmental issues with a particular interest and knowledge of climate change, air emissions/air quality, and energy use. Experience in organizing and/or issue-based campaigning is a tremendous plus.

Advocacy

  • Advocacy efforts that engage decision makers on clean air, energy and climate change;
  • Serve as a public spokesperson before the general public and the media;
  • Work with the communications staff to develop and execute a communications strategy that includes electronic and web-based communications, media releases, and the development of other outreach materials;
  • Work with program staff to develop strategies for achieving the organization’s policy goals;
  • Conduct public outreach and be able to build and lead effective coalitions;
  • Serve as a lobbyist and spokesperson before the state legislature; and
  • Conduct analysis of specific regulations, legislation, the state budget and other policies as needed.

Project Management

  • Assist with the creation of goals for programs and projects including intermediate objectives and timelines for achieving them;
  • Stay up-to-date on developments that influence programs and projects;
  • Identify funding opportunities, develop grant proposals and foundation reports, and maintain relationships with donors; and,
  • Track environmental legislation in the New York State Legislature.

Qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience in advocacy, community organizing, policy analysis, and/or government relations;
  • A Bachelor’s degree in public policy or environmental;
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities, manage multiple projects, and work in the team environment;
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills;
  • Strong interest in public policy and politics; and,
  • Licensed driver with a willingness to travel as needed;
