Title: A World at Risk: Water Security
Location: Columbia University, Morningside Campus, Alfred Lerner Hall, Roone Arledge Auditorium, 2910 Broadway, New York, NY 10027
Date/Time: March 28, 2013.
Description:
The issues of water and food security are timely and important to the discussion of the future of sustainable development. Population and climate are major drivers, leading to regional water constraints that are emerging as critical in many places in the world. The ability of societies to deal with these threats is coming into question, whether the issue is the provision of safe drinking water, or of access of industries to water, the rapid depletion of groundwater by agriculture, limits to energy production and mineral extraction, or the impacts of degraded water bodies on ecosystems. What are the innovations that can address these challenges, and what are some examples of sustainable directions towards solution?

Title: Investing with a Higher Purpose: Renewable Energy and Environmental Protection: A New Ear in U.S.-China Trade and Investment Relations
Location: Great Hall of the New York City Bar Association, 42 West 44th Street, New York, NY
Date/Time: March 18, 2013, 6 pm – 9 pm
Description:
The United States and China are currently the biggest economies in the world and yet both countries lag behind others when it comes to investing in renewable energy. Failure to invest in renewable energy at a level proportionate to the size of their economies has both economic and environmental implications for the U.S., China and indeed the world. A new chapter in U.S.-China trade relations may be expected beginning in 2013, as U.S. President Barack Obama begins his second term and the leadership of China undergoes major changes. The purpose of this Forum is to identify and explore opportunities for the U.S. and China to collaborate on trade and investment in renewable energy and environmental protection. Through such dialogue among accomplished players in the field, the Forum aims to propel action on these important topics.

The Union of Concerned Scientists puts rigorous, independent science to work to solve our planet’s most pressing problems. Joining with citizens across the country, we combine technical analysis and effective advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for a healthy, safe, and sustainable future.
What began as a collaboration between students and faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 is now an alliance of more than 400,000 citizens and scientists. UCS members are people from all walks of life: parents and businesspeople, biologists and physicists, teachers and students. Our members understand that scientific analysis—not political calculations or corporate hype—should guide our efforts to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.
Our experts work on some of the most complex and daunting problems in our history: stemming the tide of global warming, finding sustainable ways to feed, power and transport ourselves, and reducing the threat of catastrophic war. Our achievements over the decades show that thoughtful action based on the best available science can help safeguard our future and the future of our planet.

Overview:
Cape Cod National Seashore contains a diverse variety of habitats and is characterized by open ocean, beaches, estuaries, and tidal flats. In addition to the marine environment, the Seashore is home to a unique kettle pond system, sensitive vernal pools, and coastal heathlnds – a globally uncommon habitat supporting species that are correspondingly rare. More than 17 federally-listed threatened or endangered species are found throughout the Seashore and its marine waters. The physical processes that initially formed Cape Cod continue to reshape the area via wind, waves, tides, and longshore currents. Humans have been a part of this dynamic landscape for at least 10,000 years. These ecosystems processes have created and continue to influence the sensitive natural and cultural heritage that the Nickerson Conservation Fund is dedicated to study.
Funding Opportunity Description:
The Nickerson Conservation Fellowship Committee is currently soliciting proposals for the Nickerson Conservation Fellowship award. Proposals should briefly outline the objectives of the study, and include methods and budget. Emphasis should be placed on how the study will increase conservation efforts or contribute to the protection of the Seashore’s natural and cultural resources.
Eligibility: Anyone can apply, regardless of student of professional status. Awardees will be asked to present their findings as part of the Seashore Science Symposium.
Evaluation Criteria: Applications will be judged on the basis of: technical merit, management applicability, feasibility or project, cost effectiveness, applicant’s accomplishments, and potential for boosting professional development. Applicants are encouraged to collaborate or consult with CCNS natural resource management on staff in developing project proposals.
Terms: Completed application packets are due by April 15, 2013. A stipend of approximately $3,000 will be provided. The final $500 of the stipend will be awarded upon receipt of the fellow’s final report and is due within one year of the initial award. Indirect costs (overhead) will not be supported by the fellowship. Laboratory space and field equipment may be available. Awardees will be notified in mid-April.
