Alumni Internship: Energy Vision – New York City

*If you want more information about this BCEP graduate’s internship experience or want to get in touch with a student/alum, please contact Caroline Ramaley at [email protected].

Energy Vision

Organization: Energy Vision

 Location: New York City, New York

Student Name and Class Year:  Danielle Bisset, 2014

Description: Energy Vision’s Top Priority is weaning the 10 million buses and trucks on U.S. roadways from polluting diesel fuel. It was recently labeled carcinogenic by the World Health Organization.  Buses and trucks make up just 4% of U.S. vehicles, but consume 23% of our road fuel. They no longer need to use diesel, but can shift to cleaner natural gas or, even better, renewable natural gas made from waste.

Energy Vision’s Strategy:

  • To educate government and business leaders, students, and a broader citizenry in the US about the risks of our heavy reliance on petroleum-based fuels.
  • To analyze and report on the domestic alternative fuels, such as the best option to date, renewable natural gas, that can best reduce air pollution, cut greenhouse gases, and replace use of oil.
  • To work with municipal and state governments, businesses, vehicle fleet operators, communities and universities in designing programs moving toward a long term sustainable hydrogen future.

Getting on the Path to Sustainable Fuels

Clean alternative fuels are available that can free us from oil dependency and put us on the path to sustainable fuels. The challenge is to act now. Energy Vision particularly focuses on identifying and promoting the fuel and technology alternatives that offer the greatest near and long term benefits:

  • Minimal vehicle emissions, greenhouse gas reductions and greater energy security today
  • The technology learning curves that will facilitate a longer term transition to the era of secure as well as pollution and carbon-free fuels.
  •  The end goal of this transition, according to more and more world authorities, is hydrogen fuel cell powered transportation –with hydrogen made first from natural gas, then from water using renewable energy.

Science Policy Fellow, Environmental Investigation Agency – Washington, DC

Organization: Environmental Investigation Agency

Position Title: Science Policy Fellow

Location: Washington, DC

Hours and Compensation: Full time from January 5 to June 30, 2015; paid

Application Deadline: November 30, 2014

Description: Over the past 25 years, the Environmental Investigation Agency has pioneered the use of investigative techniques to expose global environmental crime and has successfully campaigned to bring about changes in international laws and government policies.

The Forest Program works to expose illegal logging and transform global supply chains in order to protect the world’s forests, as well as the people, wildlife and global climate that depend on them. EIA led the campaign to pass the world’s first law prohibiting imports of illegally sourced timber products, which was passed in 2008. The Forest Campaign is now on the leading edge of supply chain and trade analysis for timber and wood products. Emerging technologies for timber analysis, including stable isotopes, DNA, near-infrared (NIR), and wood anatomy, have the potential to dramatically shift the global market place by assisting companies and governments to verify supply chains of timber products. As new laws in the US, EU and Australia now prohibit trade in illegally sourced timber, customs officials and forest law enforcement agencies around the world are looking for practical methods to incorporate these emerging technologies, already widely used in the agriculture sector, into forest management and trade monitoring initiatives.

Responsibilities: EIA’s Forest Team is seeking a Science Policy Fellow as a paid, temporary position to support our Washington, DC office. The Science Policy Fellow will assist the EIA Forest Team in evaluating the potential application of these emerging technologies to the real world of compliance and supply chain monitoring and will perform the following duties:

  • Research the current science on emerging technologies for timber-tracking and wood species identification; conduct interviews with leading minds in this field; review and summarize results for internal EIA briefing documents;
  • Produce fact sheets and briefing papers on emerging timber tracking technologies for a variety of audiences, including policymakers, enforcement officials, NGOs, and the private sector. These briefing papers and campaign materials will showcase recent technological advances and describe emerging technologies, and present a case for how these innovative tools can be used for timber tracking to ensure sustainable and legal sourcing of timber and wood products, building upon existing forest policy frameworks;
  • Conduct outreach to relevant stakeholders, including academics, policymakers, NGOs and industry members, in consumer and forest producer countries, to: explore potential applications for new technologies in wood product supply chains; identify new champions for this technology; and to identify potential concerns regarding open access to reference data;
  • Research will include how technology transfer of timber tracking and species identification technologies can contribute to international development assistance programs aimed at promoting sustainable forestry in developing countries and access for forest-dependent communities;
  • As needed, travel domestically and internationally to obtain information, interview key researchers, and attend and present at meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Background in chemistry, biology, environmental science and/or forestry;
  • General background in international forest policy;
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally;
  • Understanding of timber and forest product supply chains, with experience working in the industry a plus;
  • Detailed understanding of genetic or stable isotopic analysis from wood or other sectors a plus;
  • Foundation in community forestry a plus;

Food Systems Efficiency Advocate, Natural Resources Defense Council – Washington, DC or San Francisco

Organization: Natural Resources Defense Council

Position Title: Food Systems Efficiency Advocate

Location: Washington, DC or San Francisco

Hours and Compensation: Full-time

Application Deadline: Applications will be considered upon receipt on a rolling basis until December 5, 2014.

Description: NRDC is seeking a Food Waste Prevention Advocate to work with the Food and Agriculture Program team in our Washington DC or San Francisco office.

Up to 40 percent of all food in the U.S. goes uneaten. This has severe economic, social, and environmental implications, including the loss of  vast natural resources used to produce, transport, cool, and then dispose of that food. In addition, a 60 percent increase in food demand is predicted as we move towards a future with a larger population and richer diets.  Just as energy efficiency has been embraced as a method for offsetting energy needs, reducing waste and losses in the food system offers a way to meet some of that future food demand, offsetting the pressure to convert more land to agriculture or intensify cropland production further.

Responsibilities: The NRDC Food and Agriculture Program is working on multiple fronts to address this problem.  Our approach is a combination of engagement with the food industry, public education through reports, press, and other media campaigns, and policy solutions.

We now seek an Advocate to expand our team.  Together with other NRDC staff, the Advocate will:

  • Help our team design and win federal and municipal policies that will lead to reduced food loss and waste.
  • Provide subject expertise and project management for a broad national public education campaign to help consumers reduce food waste.
  • Provide research, analysis, blogs, written comments and testimony to educate policymakers, media representatives and consumers about this issue.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for NRDC at meetings and with the press.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years or more of related work experience.  Food industry experience a plus.
•  Graduate degree in a related field is preferred, but not required.
•  Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Demonstrated ability for advocacy.
•  Familiarity with the issues of sustainable agriculture, retail and food service workings, and/or waste management strongly desired.

How to Apply: Apply online at the NRDC jobs page.
