Job Description:

Provide biological support for an established natural resources group nationwide, with emphasis on projects in the Southwestern US. 2014 Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program Descriptions

The 2014 DDCSP@NAU Summer Immersion will take place in Flagstaff and the broader Colorado Plateau from June 2 – July 3, 2014. During the program, Doris Duke Conservation Scholars will spend five weeks studying complex environmental issues in the Grand Canyon region. This immersion program will take place partially on the NAU campus in Flagstaff, Arizona and partially in the field at Grand Canyon National Park, on the Grand Canyon Trust’s Kane and Two Mile Ranches, and on the Navajo and Hopi Reservations. This program will provide students with the opportunity to get to know the land and one another as they travel throughout the region. The immersion program will blend classroom study with field trips and service-learning projects in order to provide students with many perspectives on the conservation profession.

The immersion program will make extensive use of case studies that highlight the complexity of conservation issues on the Colorado Plateau, where the combination of vast tracts of public land, intact native communities, high levels of biological diversity, and abundant energy resources collide. Students will have the opportunity to meet land managers, conservation scientists, environmental communicators, and biodiversity advocates during the summer immersion program. The group will discuss management issues, such as balancing natural resource preservation and the visitor experience, with science staff at Grand Canyon National Park. Scholars will experience the beauty and environmental complexity of the Grand Canyon region during a float trip on the Colorado River through Marble Canyon. Students will also participate in a number of service-learning research and volunteer projects hosted and facilitated by the Grand Canyon Trust and its federal, state, and tribal partners.

The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars program, hosted by Northern Arizona University’s Landscape Conservation Initiative, is a multi-year program funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation that serves to strengthen the conservation profession by training students who can make significant contributions to broadening the field of conservation. The program creates opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in mentored research activities in conservation biology and other disciplines relevant to land, water, and wildlife conservation. DDCSP@NAU provides learning and research opportunities for 20 Doris Duke Conservation Scholars who were chosen from a national pool of undergraduate students through a competitive process. Position Description

The DDCSP@NAU seeks to hire a field instructor with knowledge of southwestern environmental issues and experience managing groups in a wilderness setting.

The DDCSP Field Instructor will serve as a role model to students, teach wilderness skills, and provide logistical/risk management support during multiday field trips to the Colorado Plateau. The DDCSP Field Instructor will work with other DDCSP staff to lead 18-20 students as they camp on the Colorado Plateau, cook, hike, and collect environmental data in the field. At times the Field Instructor may be expected to independently supervise 8 college sophomores in the field. The Field Instructor will facilitate small group conversations about course readings and teach short lessons on indigenous knowledge, or environmental conservation, as appropriate. The Field Instructor will also provide support to students during portions of the program that take place on NAU’s campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the natural and cultural history of the Colorado Plateau
  • Experience managing / supervising / leading groups in a wilderness setting
  • Graduate-level coursework in environmental science, ecology, conservation biology, or a related field
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive 11-passenger vans
  • Current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, ecology, conservation biology, or a related field
  • High school, community college, or university-level teaching experience
  • Experience working with first-generation college students and students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications

Job Description:

ABOUT CCYC The Canyon Country Youth Corps (CCYC) is a program operated by the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education in Monticello, Utah. CCYC provides opportunities for youth and young adults, ages 15-25, to participate in service work projects on public lands in Southeastern Utah in partnership with the land-managing agencies of the region. Projects include trail maintenance and construction; fence construction, repair or demolition; habitat restoration; mechanical and non-mechanical thinning; invasive species removal and treatment; and other conservation related projects in backcountry and front country settings. CCYC involves youth from the four corners region as well as national hires.

SALARY $300-350 per week May-June (training). $425-$500 per week July- October depending on experience and job performance. Crew Leaders are eligible for Americorps Education Awards up to $2,000 upon season completion.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Complete conservation projects in the four corners region- chainsaw, trails, and fencing work primarily- while taking time out to develop leadership skills with a variety of activities. These activities will be lead by CCYC staff and Head Crew Leaders and will include: discussion, both in one-on-one and group formats; scenarios designed to make crew leaders in training think critically about situations they may encounter; lecture-style lessons in both hard and soft skills; and practice leading the projects, completing paperwork, and supervising rig-up and derig operations.

Upon successful completion of the training, the Crew Leaders will receive a raise in pay and will lead teams of 6 corps members with a co-lead, July through October.

WORK SCHEDULE CCYC crews typically work 9 days on, 5 days off, camping in remote locations during time on. During time off crews are welcome to stay at our base camp facility in Monticello. Summer youth crews work 5 on, 2 off, but are supervised for the entirety of the four-week program. There is typically one week off for Crew Leaders in between seasons.

JOB DUTIES

ADMINISTRATION

  • Work with CCYC staff to implement operating policies, crew member handbook, grievance procedure, uniform and safety policy, and all other necessary operational policies and procedures.
  • Punctually complete and submit daily and weekly paperwork, and other forms as needed.

FIELD OPERATIONS

  • Participate in part of the Crew Leader Development Program
  • Implement service projects according to technical specifications given by land managementagencies and CCYC Staff.
  • Implement and uphold safety procedures.
  • Assist with daily/weekly operational schedules of crews.
  • Maintain solid relations with project sponsors and partners and maintain high service project quality.
  • Maintain equipment (vehicles, tools, supplies) and purchase food and necessary program supplies, while staying within existing budget.
  • Foster an ‘esprit de corps’ and participate in corps activities as needed.
  • Work hard and live outdoors for long periods of time in variable conditions

CREW MEMBER DEVELOPMENT

  • Assist with training and orientation of corps members (summer and fall).
  • Implement development activities including: education, life skills, mentorship, training, field trips, enrichment activities, and service learning throughout corps program.

The American Pirde is a historic 130′ three masted schooner built in 1941 on the east coast. Now located in Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach, CA. We provide shipboard learning experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom, while offering hands on, action oriented activities that stress leadership, teamwork, communication and good sportsmanship. We strive to promote interest and education in the value and worthiness of our national maritime heritage and historic sailing ships, as well as education, awareness and preservation of the earth’s oceans and welfare of all marine life.

The position includes many aspects that vary depending on the season and current programming but will definitely include: Living, playing and working aboard a tallship, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, swimming, playing games, hanging out on the beach, occasionally dressing up as a sailor, and ship maintenance. As part of our programming, which may last between three hours and five days, you may teach about fish and squid anatomy, touch tank critters, tide pools, knots, maritime history, sharks, water quality, ship construction, oceanography, stars, geology, island flora and fauna, and kelp forests just to name a few. We do not expect our applicants to have all these skills just the desire to build upon their knowledge and experience.

All staff who work with the American Pride assume an important role in working with our participants. Staff are expected to be leaders, role models and even a “stand-in” parent during programming. This responsibility carries with it certain expectations of how staff will act aboard and around participants, clients, other staff and parents. Overview:
Mile High Youth Corps is a regional, non-profit, AmeriCorps (www.americorps.gov) affiliated
organization that engages youth in terms of service that help the planet and provide pathways to a
promising future. Corpsmembers work on conservation and environmental stewardship projects
throughout the Denver metro area while engaging in meaningful education activities.
Duties & Responsibilities:
o Successfully complete new Corpsmember orientation and training.
o Work on a crew with approximately 10 young adults completing service and conservation
projects throughout the Denver metro area.
o Complete conservation projects on public lands throughout the Denver metro area and Front
Range. Project examples are trail construction and maintenance, fencing, campground
improvements, noxious weed eradication, wildlife habitat improvements and public land
maintenance and clean up.
o May be required to participate in Colorado Cares National Service Day.
o Fully participate in environmental education, leadership development, civic engagement,

sun, heat, wind, rain, etc.) and hike 7 miles with a day-pack.
o Available for a minimum of 450 hours of service, 40 hours per week.
o Able to be on time and maintain a minimum of 90% attendance rate through term of service.
o Experience or strong desire to learn the technical skills needed to effectively maintain public
lands.
o Must commit to complete the program and participate fully in work projects, and education.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position is a paid 12-week internship, available for summer 2014. Responsibilities will cover a variety of tasks, including:

Further responsibilities include preparing presentations and other outreach materials based on the analytical reports produced at CCAP as well as providing logistical and general support for conferences and workshops organized by CCAP. The Associate will report to the Program Manager and senior policy staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research and quantitative analysis on developing-country climate and energy policies.
  • Prepare high-quality deliverables such as quantitative analyses, case studies, policy reports, memos, etc. with guidance or supervision from Program Manager and senior policy staff.
  • Prepare presentations and conference materials and help with general preparation for CCAP conferences and workshops.
  • Proactively liaise with outside experts, technical consultants, and international policymakers.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate for this position will be an articulate professional with experience in climate and energy policy, quantitative analysis, and stakeholder outreach. The candidate will ideally hold a Master’s degree in public policy, international relations, environmental science or related degree, and have previous experience working with one or more of our MAIN-Asia countries. The candidate will ideally have a minimum of 2 years professional experience in conducting policy and/or economic analyses of climate policies in sectors including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and/or waste management. Additionally, ideal applicants will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences:

  • Excellent research skills required with ability to conduct research on complicated policy issues in relevant areas, especially in circumstances where information availability is limited;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills required, with the ability to write for both policy and analytic audiences;
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills;
  • Experience in organizing conferences or events and demonstrated professionalism in dealing with external stakeholders;
  • Advanced organizational skills, attention to detail, and timeliness with deliverables;

The Position

The CGBD business manager directly provides all financial and office management for the organization.

Financial Management (40%)

  • Manage AP, AR, credit cards and travel reimbursements; manage cash flow to meet operational needs; perform all bookkeeping including journal entries and account reconciliations; secure executive director review and sign-off.
  • Develop annual budget in coordination with executive director, program managers, and board finance committee; produce regular reports and analysis of variance; monitor investment portfolio performance.
  • Manage annual audit, including preparation of all schedules and liaison with audit team; maintain relationship with consulting accountant to solicit additional technical support as needed; provide support to audit committee to review auditor report and recommendations.
  • Provide staff support to board treasurer and finance committee.

  • Maintain liaison with insurance vendor and evaluate annual coverage to ensure its continuing suitability.

Grants Management (40%)

Meeting Support (10%)

  • Review contracts with service providers (hotels, caterers, et al.), submit direct bill applications, and ensure contractual payments are made on time.

Position Summary:

Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) is creating a new position, E2 State Advocate. The E2 State Advocate will direct E2’s advocacy work at the state level in the Midwest and other key states east of the Rockies, in alignment with E2 and NRDC institutional priorities. The State Advocate will manage the recruitment, engagement and deployment of E2 members in those states.

E2 is a national organization of business people who advocate for policies that advance both environmental and economic objectives. www.e2.org E2 is an affiliate of NRDC, and coordinates closely with NRDC on select policy issues and campaigns where a business perspective is valuable. In recent years, E2 has prioritized work on climate and clean energy, and has also addressed water and ocean resource management.

Our single largest campaign over the next three years will be adoption of EPA power plant carbon pollution standards at the Federal level, with implementation at the state level. E2’s objective will be to demonstrate and promote the economic benefits to businesses and communities from developing energy efficiency and renewable energy resources that will deliver significant emission reductions in compliance with these carbon standards. In order to make that case, E2 needs to expand its resources at the state level, both in terms of E2 staff leadership and recruiting of strategic E2 members.

Responsibilities:

The E2 State Advocate should be a dynamic professional who will:

  • Identify and recruit business leaders for advocacy purposes in identified Midwest states, and potentially other target states for the EPA carbon standards work.
  • Engage business leaders on an ongoing basis, through personal outreach and by organizing region specific programs and events, such as roundtables, expert forums/workshops and meetings with officials.
  • Identify opportunities to deploy business leaders for direct advocacy and media outreach in support of the EPA carbon standards and related state-level clean energy/climate policies.
  • Coordinate with other ‘clean energy’ business /trade association groups in the Midwest and other target states around the EPA carbon standards work.
  • Support the E2 Executive Director in building a strong E2 membership and presence in the Midwest.
  • The E2 State Advocate will report to the E2 Executive Director, will work closely with the E2 Federal Advocate and the E2 Communications Director, and will coordinate with NRDC staff to make sure that the efforts of the E2 business advocates are aligned with the larger campaign.

Qualifications:

Job Description:

Madagascar’s 5,600 km coastline comprises one of the most extensive brackish water, shallow marine and continental shelf habitats of any Indian Ocean country apart from India. These “blue forests” (i.e., seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and coastal wetlands) play crucial roles in supporting endangered biodiversity, and numerous ecosystem goods and services vital to increasingly poor and vulnerable coastal communities. In addition, these ecosystems play a critical role in mitigating global climate change owing to their exceptional capacity to sequester CO2.

Mangroves are extremely productive forested ecosystems and have an extraordinary capacity to sequester carbon dioxide. But these ecosystems are being rapidly destroyed – at a higher rate than terrestrial tropical forests. Madagascar harbours approximately 2,800 km2 of mangroves (Africa’s fourth largest mangrove forests). These forests are highly threatened by over-exploitation and conversion for cultivation. The Blue Forests project is assessing the feasibility of and working towards developing carbon finance and other payments for ecosystem services (PES) mechanisms for the community-based conservation, restoration and sustainable use of Madagascar’s mangrove forests, which in turn will help maintain critical biodiversity, ecosystem services and essential forest resources. The new Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Wetlands Restoration and Conservation (WRC) project category now means that there is a real possibility of carbon finance for mangrove wetlands. Our work aims to develop demonstration WRC projects, and so begin to realise the full value of blue carbon habitats.

Summary Job Description

In order to support the successful development of our blue carbon projects along the west coast of Madagascar we are seeking a scientist/forester experienced in the successful development of forest carbon projects. The job will entail managing the applied research required to develop a VCS REDD+CIW project; as well as presenting the blue carbon science outputs of the project to government and high level national REDD+ forums, and supporting the integration of blue carbon into Madagascar’s national REDD+ activities. Consequently the successful candidate will be experienced in technical carbon project development, but ideally will also have a working knowledge of REDD+ policy and the ability to communicate the project’s outputs to policy makers.

Responsibilities

  1. Management of blue carbon science within Madagascar in order to develop and validate a VCS blue carbon project:
    1. Managing scientific carbon measurements (AGB, BGB, SOC, soil accretion etc.) in mangroves at our three pilot sites;
    2. Data management and analysis to meet the requirements of carbon projects, as well as for scientific publication;
    3. Supervising the development of participatory carbon stock monitoring for mangroves.
  2. Assistance with production of Project Descriptions and monitoring plans:
    1. Support for the ex ante calculation of emission reductions (development of models & spreadsheets) documenting the fulfilment of VM00x steps;
    2. Development of plans for ex post monitoring.
  3. Engagement of the Malagasy Government and REDD+ readiness process to ensure coordination with, and appropriate integration of project-based blue carbon activities into, the national REDD+ framework:
    1. Representation of BV at Madagascar’s R-PP development events and presentation of the project’s scientific outputs to national government and REDD+ forums;
    2. Engaging national government to gain support for blue carbon project-scale activities undertaken by BV and to ensure that these are complimentary to national actions;
    3. Ensuring the Blue Forests project development is in line with the national REDD+ framework.

The job will be based in Antananarivo, but involve stays in remote coastal environments throughout the west coast of Madagascar, particularly in the northwest. It therefore requires the willingness to work in remote locations with basic amenities for periods of time. Within Blue Ventures you will join a growing and dynamic team of dedicated Malagasy and international scientists, conservationists and community members. As a senior member of the team, you report to the overall project manager; and manage a team of three scientists. The job comes with an annual salary of between 10 – 16,500 GBP a year, depending on experience; international flights and medical insurance. The job offers the opportunity to work within one of the few groups in the world undertaking this novel, timely and important work.

Qualifications/Skills Required

We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, hard-working and highly organized person with the following essential skills and experience:
