River Policy Internship, Riverkeeper – New York

Dates and compensation: The River Policy Internship is unpaid, but we will work with your school or institution to secure academic credit for your work, if that is feasible. The River Policy Intern is expected to work 40 hours per week at the Riverkeeper headquarters in Ossining, NY, though remote work (up to one day per week) and off-site meetings with local, state, and federal agencies (across the Hudson Valley and into New York City), as well as softball team games, will regularly get the River Policy Intern out of the office! Description: Riverkeeper’s Hudson River program is seeking interns during the summer of 2015 for its new interdisciplinary summer internship program. Interns will gain in-depth and practical experience in the field of public-interest environmental science, law, and policy, and will play a critical role in helping Riverkeeper further our core mission: to safeguard the ecological integrity of the Hudson River and its tributaries by tracking down and stopping polluters. Interns will work closely with Riverkeeper staff attorneys—investigating pollution claims, building cases, and advocating for strong environmental policies in New York City and the Hudson River Valley. Responsibilities may include conducting research, drafting memorandums and other advocacy documents, and investigating pollution reports.

Qualifications: Riverkeeper prefers applicants with strong interdisciplinary backgrounds, ideally focused on water issues. Applicants should ideally have a basic understanding of environmental sciences and/or policy and have exposure to federal and state environmental issues. We are looking for interns with strong research and writing skills, organized work habits and a passionate desire to advocate for clean water and ecosystem protection. Diversity or American Indian Internship, National Park Service – Colorado

Description: The GeoCorps participant will be responsible for assisting Human Dimensions staff in projects and materials in support of the Wildlife Conservation Branch (WCB) and Biological Resources Division (BRD) within the NPS Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS). NRSS is a Washington, DC Support Office, physically located in Fort Collins, CO about an hour north of Denver, CO. We provide technical assistance to parks across the country and also develop policy guidance and synthesize information on emerging conservation issues that affect multiple parks and regions. The Human Dimensions Program provides guidance and assists parks and regions in integrating information about people’s varied perceptions of biological resources and management to ensure that the public is considered and engaged in the stewardship of our national heritage. Theories and techniques from the social sciences and humanities are utilized to help managers better understand audiences and management contexts and use this knowledge to improve decision-making, stakeholder engagement, communication, and management outcomes that meet ecological and social needs today and into the future.

The participant will work on a variety of research, outreach, and program assistance tasks. The participant’s main task will be data management, analysis, and report writing for national review of hunting, trapping, and fishing activities allowed in parks. The participant will be responsible for quality assurance and quality control of data collected through an online survey interface, contacting parks when necessary to ensure data accuracy. The participant will also synthesize data and prepare a report on the findings and will investigate data sharing and display options. In addition, the participant may assist with projects such as evaluation of the social outcomes of bioblitzes, development of tools for collaboration and civic engagement, and development of Human Dimensions program content for outlets such as web pages and program briefs. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.

Qualifications: Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in human dimensions, biological resource management, wildlife biology, conservation biology, or other related field with a broad understanding of both biological and social science concepts and terminology. Graduate students, especially in the field of human dimensions of natural resource management, are preferred. The participant should have excellent computer skills (MS Office), organizational, technical and non-technical writing and editing, and oral and written communication skills, as well as an ability work well with others in a problem-solving capacity. Experience with database management and survey design is desirable. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. California Central Valley River Restoration Director, American Rivers

Description: The Central Valley River Restoration Director will help American Rivers protect and restore floodplains in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Basin, promote opportunities for Central Valley communities to recreate on Central Valley rivers, and promote a river stewardship ethic among California decision makers. The Director will work to promote program objectives in close collaboration with numerous organizations American Rivers has partnered with, including other conservation groups, government agencies, universities and communities. The Director will contribute policy and technical expertise to our efforts to restore Central Valley floodplain functions and reform flood management policy at the state and national level.

Responsibilities:

  • Help develop solutions to technical, legal and political challenges of expanding flood bypasses on the lower San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers.
  • Identify, map, describe and evaluate opportunities for flood plain restoration and multi-benefit flood management projects in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, including reservoir re-operation.
  • Conduct analysis of local, state and federal laws and policies to identify changes necessary to expedite flood management reform in the Central Valley.
  • Conduct research, including literature reviews, interviews with issue experts and stakeholders, and data collection.
  • Review plans and environmental documents. Draft comments and advocacy letters to shape river management projects, programs and policies.
  • Draft fundraising proposals for restoration projects.
  • Conduct quantitative analyses as needed (Excel-based modeling and data analysis).
  • Represent American Rivers in public planning forums such as the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan, the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, the Delta Stewardship Council’s Delta Plan, and the State Water Resources Control Board’s update of the Delta Water Quality Control Plan to promote floodplain restoration and non-structural flood management strategies.
  • Take a lead role in developing public outreach and education strategies and materials to promote understanding of the benefits of floodplain restoration and non-structural flood management strategies.
  • Participate in outreach to key decision makers in the local, state and federal government to promote program goals.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with an emphasis in environmental planning, engineering, science, economics, policy or equivalent professional experience. Law degrees considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in California river and water policy field or equivalent.
  • Proven experience developing, funding and advancing on-the-ground projects, including land acquisition, particularly wetland and river restoration projects.
  • Excellent understanding of California water law and policy, with focus on flood management, hydrology/hydraulics and river restoration preferred.
  • Proven involvement in analytically complex projects and the ability to read and synthesize large amounts of data. Strong analytical skills coupled with a solid understanding of and interest in data and metrics preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to effectively communicate with senior agency and legislative representatives.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal skills and a good sense of humor.

Dates and compensation: While we’re psyched about the training experience we’re offering, we also know that you can’t pay for groceries with experience; therefore, we offer a maximum stipend of $3,800 to offset the cost of working with IPS while you help us build the future of the progressive movement.

IPS firmly believes that financial barriers shouldn’t exclude people from internship opportunities. However, we strongly encourage applicants to find resources through their schools and other scholarships. Many schools offer assistance for summer internship programs, and we ask that all applicants explore those options first in order to allow us to accept a greater number of interns that do not have access to those resources.

Interns may also receive academic credit. IPS offers transportation assistance of 8$ per day but does not offer housing assistance.

Responsibilities: Our summer intern will help support our domestic climate justice work in collaboration with the Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) and other US partners. This summer we will be engaging through writing, research, analysis and policy proposals in the following efforts:

  2. Support CJA and its members in developing an Energy Democracy Platform
  3. Support CJA’s “Summer of Our Power” tour and help prepare for 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina capstone event in New Orleans (does not include traveling to LA)

The Chemical Footprint Project (CFP) is a new program launched in 2014 to measure the performance of leading corporations in their efforts to reduce toxic chemicals and choose safer alternatives in products and manufacturing. CFP aims to become the standard for measuring the chemical footprint of corporations and will be groundbreaking in its impact. The program is a collaborative effort between nonprofit organizations and corporations in key economic sectors – socially responsible investors, health care organizations, retailers, and others – that are leading the market shift to safer chemicals. CPA is partnering with the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and the consultancy Pure Strategies in launching the CFP. We seek an individual who can effectively research and write content for both BizNGO and the CFP.

This is a new position. The employee will work closely with and report directly to the Chair of BizNGO and Co-Director of Clean Production Action.
