Charles Doran
Distinguished Visiting Professor of Mathematics and Physics

Biography: Charles Doran’s research centers on the arithmetic, geometry, topology, and physics of Calabi-Yau manifolds. His previous faculty positions have been S. Chowla Research Postdoctoral Fellow, Pennsylvania State University (1999–2000); VIGRE/Ritt Assistant Professor, Columbia University (2000–04); Assistant Professor/Affiliate Associate Professor, University of Washington (2003–11); Associate Professor/Professor, University of Alberta (2008–21). He has held the McCalla Professorship of Science at the University of Alberta (2013–14), Visiting Campobassi Professorship of Physics at the University of Maryland (2015–17), Visiting Professorship of Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics at Brown University (2017–18), and is an associate member of the Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications at Harvard University (2018–present). He was also the director of the Alberta site of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (2009–15). Doran has published articles in numerous refereed publications, including Communications in Mathematical Physics, Advances in Mathematics, Research in the Mathematical Sciences, Advances in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, Communications in Number Theory and Physics, Israel Journal of Mathematics, SIGMA, and Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching. He was awarded the Merten M. Hasse Prize of the Mathematical Association of America for his paper “From Polygons to String Theory” with former PhD student Ursula Whitcher Other grants and awards from, among others, Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris, National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, National Science Foundation, Mathematical Association of America, and the Government of Alberta.
