MD/DO, PhD, or the Dual Degree?
If you are interested in pursuing a career in research you likely know that there are a variety of ways you can accomplish this, and the path that you pursue depends a lot on what you want your focus to be. Clinical labs typically consist of a team of people including medical doctors, those holding a PhD in a particular field, and those holding dual degrees (MD/PhD or DO/PhD). You can participate in research with an MD or DO degree but the focus here is clinical work, about 70% clinical and 30% research, the PhD is primarily a research degree, while those holding the dual degree typically focus on the research (about 80% of the time) and have a clinical practice (about 20% of the time) that informs the research they conduct, as well as contributing directly to the field of science they have expertise in. Many with the dual degree go on to academic medicine, teaching in a medical school while doing research and perhaps having a practice. Those holding the dual degree are often applying for funding to support the research they are heading and overseeing the work of the lab. While it is possible to do these things with a clinical degree, people who pursue one or the other are aware of where they prefer to focus their work.
It is possible, at some schools, to apply for the PhD during your medical training, and some even pursue the PhD after they are doctors. Just like with any career path, interests evolve and take shape when immersed in a particular environment. If, however, you have had the opportunity to conduct research in a variety of settings and know that this is the path you would like to pursue then the dual degree might be right for you!
