A bilingual reading by Portuguese poet Rosa Alice Branco and her translator Alexis Levitin
Alice Branco's powerful book Cattle of the Lord won the prestigious Spiral Maior Poetry award from Galicia (for best book of poetry in Portuguese, Galician, or Spanish, for the year 2009). The book appeared in a bilingual edition by Milkweed Editions in this country last spring. Collections of Rosa Alice Branco's poetry have appeared in Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Quebec, Tunisia, Corsica, Venezuela, Brazil, and elsewhere. Here in the USA her poetry has appeared in forty magazines to date, including The Massachusetts Review, Pleiades, The Literary Review and Prairie Schooner. Her translator, Alexis Levitin, has published over thirty books of translation of Portuguese poetry and prose and is a SUNY Distinguished Professor. His works include Clarice Lispector’s Soulstorm (short prose) and Eugénio de Andrade’s Forbidden Words (poetry), both published by New Directions. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Commission, the Witter Bynner Foundation, the Gulbenkian Foundation, and Columbia University’s Translation Center, which awarded him the Fernando Pessoa Prize.For more information, call 845-758-7171, or e-mail [email protected].
