Institute for Writing and Thinking Presents
Justice and the New York Courts Workshop
Friday, February 8, 2019
8:30 am – 4:00 pm EST/GMT-5
An all-day professional development workshop in collaboration with the Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking (IWT) and the Historical Society of the New York Courts
Thanks to a generous grant from the Historical Society of the New York Courts, this is the second year we are able to offer this incredible professional development workshop free of charge to all participants. The workshop is designed to help history and social studies teachers create lesson plans that will engage students in the study of their subjects and materials at a deep, sustaining level. Utilizing the Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking’s unique “writing to read” practices, this workshop will focus on strategies and techniques for the analysis and interpretation of judicial opinions, historical primary documents and contemporary political writings. We will work on the development of lesson plans for our students that will make the study of primary historical sources both interesting and fun. The strategies implemented will help teachers meet the rigorous pedagogical demands of the new Regents documentary “framework-based” approach, as well as the objectives and standards of the Common Core.
