Olin Humanities, Room 205
5:00 pm – 6:30 pm EST/GMT-5
How are the histories of wars constructed? Who gets included in them and in what capacity? This lecture focuses on the “War Childhood Museum” (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina), a unique institution whose mission is to raise awareness about the many ways in which children across the globe are affected by wars. By analyzing the experiences of the museum’s Bosnian and Ukrainian offices, Iuliia Skubytska, a historian and former director of Kyiv’s War Childhood Museum, compares two contexts in which the museum is organizing exhibitions and educational events that share children’s stories of surviving war with a wider public. Skubytska will address the topics of popular perception of children’s war experiences and their representation in public spaces. She also reflects on the challenges that one faces when trying to present an inclusive, nonpartisan story of complex military conflicts and the societal wounds they cause.5:00 pm – 6:30 pm EST/GMT-5
