The Szemerédi–Trotter theorem is a simple statement about points on lines in the plane. Surprisingly, this result turned out to be surprisingly useful. Over the past 20 years, it has been used to prove impressive results in combinatorics, number theory, harmonic analysis, model theory, theoretical computer science, and more.In this talk, we will introduce the Szemerédi–Trotter theorem and see how it can be used in unexpected places. We will also chat about the current research front—how mathematicians are currently trying to extend this theorem.
