September is Passport Awareness Month
Planning a big trip over the summer? Want to study abroad next year? Most countries require your passport to be valid for six months after your return date. Check the expiration on yours today! US Passport wait times have been extremely long in the past year or two (even if you pay for expedited service). The Institute for International Liberal Education (IILE) at Bard recommends applying for (or renewing) yours as far in advance of your planned travel as possible. According to the State Department, current wait times for processing (not including the shipping time on either end) are: Routine: 10-13 weeks and Expedited (an extra $60 charge): 7–9 weeks. Plan ahead!
First time applicants (who must provide their original birth certificate) can submit their application at a number of places, including the Red Hook Post Office. For adults renewing their passport, the process can be done in person or by mail. Full information and downloadable/fillable application forms in the link below.
