Anne Hunnell Chen Wins Award for Outstanding Work in Digital Archaeology
Assistant Professor of Art History and Visual Culture Anne Hunnell Chen has won the Award for Outstanding Work in Digital Archaeology from the Archaeological Institute of America. The award supports Chen’s project IDEA, the International Digital Dura-Europos Archive, which is the first multilingual and inter-institutional record to use a Linked Open Data set. IDEA aims to improve access to information for those in different disciplinary and linguistic areas, addressing the dispersal of archival materials across the world.
Chen specializes in the art and architecture of the global Roman world, including the ancient site of Dura Europos in modern-day Syria. As described in the IDEA project’s historical background, the site is unique for its high concentration of religiously diverse objects and also its effective preservation. “New digital methods, including principles of Linked Open Data (LOD), offer means to diversify the range of perspectives shaping our knowledge of Dura’s past,” write the project team.
Chen and her team hope to publicly release a web application for IDEA next fall and to implement a second phase of the project that includes community engagement. “As we further develop the Dura dataset, we intend to continue leveraging it as a practical training tool that helps us welcome students and colleagues in locations across the globe to learn alongside us and think together about more equitable practices in a shared digital future,” Chen said.
