Art Dealer Gavin Brown Donates Gallery Archives to CCS Bard: “A Resource for Young Minds”
For a generation of artists and collectors, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in New York City was a locus of contemporary art. In operation for 26 years across locations from SoHo to the Meatpacking District, West Village, and Harlem, Brown’s gallery closed in 2020 when he became a partner in Gladstone Gallery. Brown is now donating the archives of his Enterprise gallery, which he describes as a “stream-of-consciousness diary of an institution,” to the Center for Curatorial Studies (CCS) Bard Library and Archives. “I like the idea of it being a resource for young minds that are thinking about art,” says Brown.
“Gavin Brown’s Enterprise was as much a social space as an influential pillar of the commercial gallery world, and it remains a key touchstone for independent representation within the arts community,” said Tom Eccles, executive director of CCS Bard. “The archives preserve and make public a dynamic history of a space known for challenging convention and for dynamic exhibition-making.”
