Collective Interests, Collective Risks: Michèle Pierre-Louis, Former Prime Minister of Haiti, Speaks on Agency and Popular Political Movements for OSUN Summer Course
Michèle Duvivier Pierre-Louis, executive director of the Foundation for Knowledge and Freedom (FOKAL), a Haitian NGO, and the former prime minister of Haiti, spoke at the summer class Civic Engagement in Challenging Environments for the Open Society University Network. Pierre-Louis examined the mass protests against state corruption and repression currently taking place in many countries across the globe, discussing how students and other individuals living in such distressed countries can still affect political and social change. Bard College’s Jonathan Becker and Erin Cannan taught the course. Becker is OSUN vice chancellor, executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs and director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Bard. Canaan is vice president for civic engagement at Bard.
