Bard Observes Martin Luther King Day with Civic Engagement Efforts
Bard students, mostly first-years on campus for the three-week Citizen Science intensive, worked with 21 local organizations ranging from Woodstock Animal Sanctuary and Red Hook Public Library to Planned Parenthood. The Bard Office of Sustainability and the Red Hook Conservation Advisory Council hosted an electronic waste collection day for residents of Red Hook and Tivoli, which drew students and staff from the College to haul old televisions, stereos, and computers.
Students also led science projects for elementary, middle, and high school students from Rhinebeck, Kingston, Red Hook, and Tivoli. Participants worked with dry ice and chemical reactions, explored the science of the food we eat, and completed a project in the computer science lab. Student leaders have hosted science engagement activities like these throughout the month of January in local school districts.
