Reading Jamaica Kincaid: A Field Guide for Writers and Thinkers
Friday, December 6, 2024
Online Event
10:00 am – 2:30 pm EST/GMT-5
Join us for the inaugural session of the Storytellers Spotlight Series, a new online event celebrating authors whose writing has earned a cherished place in our classrooms.10:00 am – 2:30 pm EST/GMT-5
Our inaugural Storytellers Spotlight will feature Jamaica Kincaid, whose writing — famously lyrical and trenchant — touches on themes of identity and belonging, nature and gardening, and the cultural legacies of colonialism. In this interactive online workshop, we will consider such genre-defying texts as Annie John and “In History,” as well as her recent collaboration with visual artist Kara Walker, An Encyclopedia of Gardening for Colored Children. Drawing on IWT’s generative writing practices, we will work in small, collaborative workshops, exploring the "I" as witness, gardener, boundary breaker, and storyteller.
