Fifth Annual BPI Summer Residency Brings Together Emerging Leaders and Educators Working in the Field of College-in-Prison
An intensive two-week sequence of workshops on Bard’s Annandale campus, the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) Summer Residency is an immersive professional development opportunity structured to encourage residents to build community, compare notes, exchange ideas, and create a life-long network of support across their summer’s cohort, past and future cohorts, BPI staff, and Bard’s Consortium for the Liberal Arts in Prison. Room and board and other expenses for the two weeks come at no cost to residents. Workshops explore many facets of college-in-prison work including philosophical and technical approaches, curricular and academic practices, reentry support, and alumni/ae advocacy. The 2023 BPI Summer Residency cohort included 29 residents working in public and private institutions, historically Black colleges or universities, small liberal arts schools, and large research universities as faculty, program directors, newly hired practitioners, graduate students, alumni/ae, and directly impacted people. The cohort represented 13 states and five nations and was in residence at Bard College from July 16 to July 29.
